Strategy& HireVue Interview: Questions and Process
Strategy& candidates report a one-way video screen inside PwC-run recruiting, platform unconfirmed. Reported format, prompt themes and honest prep.

Strategy& is PwC’s global strategy consulting business, a distinct brand inside the wider PwC network with its own recruiting track. The firm’s official UK careers material describes a process built on a CV and personal statement, an online assessment, and then live interviews mixing fit questions with case work. In front of those live rounds, some candidates report a one-way recorded video screen. The platform is the honest unknown here: neither Strategy& nor PwC confirms a vendor, one candidate account describes eight questions in about twelve minutes without clarifying whether every item was a recorded answer, and a secondary guide calls the step HireVue-style. Treat every format detail in this article as reported, and treat your invitation email as the only specification that counts.
TL;DR
- Strategy& hires through the PwC network but runs a separate strategy recruiting track. Do not confuse this screen with the broader PwC video interview, which has its own reported format.
- Official UK material describes an online assessment followed by live case and fit interviews. A recorded video stage is candidate-reported for some applicants, and it is not confirmed to run on HireVue.
- No official question count, preparation timer, answer limit or retake policy is published. One account reports eight questions in about twelve minutes; a prep publisher reports roughly 60 to 90 seconds of prep and two to three minutes per recorded answer.
- Reported themes cluster on why strategy consulting, why Strategy& specifically, leadership, data interpretation, market news and personal fit.
- This article covers the recorded screen only. Live case rounds are the official core of selection and a different craft.
First, check whether you are in a Strategy& process at all
Strategy& is not a generic label for PwC consulting. It is the strategy arm of the PwC network, formed from the Booz & Company acquisition, and in the UK it sits within PwC’s Deals line of service while still delivering non-deals strategy work. Applications run through PwC systems, which is exactly why candidates blur the two: the portal and parts of the assessment infrastructure are shared, but the strategy stream is its own track.
So read your invitation twice. If it names Strategy&, a strategy stream, or a Deals-aligned strategy role, this article applies. If it names a general PwC graduate programme, the PwC video interview guide is the better match, because the reported format and prompts differ. Strategy& recruiting varies by geography, and the reported video screen clusters around early-career routes rather than experienced hires.
Where a recorded screen sits in the funnel
No single source maps the whole funnel, so this table combines the official UK careers FAQ with prep publishers and candidate reports. The middle row is the only one this article is about.
| Stage | What happens | Where the evidence comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Application | CV and personal statement submitted online, office and route chosen up front | Strategy& UK careers FAQ (official) |
| Online assessment | Required after application; publishers describe numerical reasoning plus games-based elements, and one describes a video interview inside this stage | Strategy& UK FAQ (official); PrepLounge and Intervyo firm guides (reported) |
| Recorded video screen | One-way answers to preset prompts, reported for some applicants; platform unconfirmed | Candidate account and Intervyo guide (reported) |
| First live round | Two back-to-back interviews of about 45 minutes each: an unstructured case opened by background and motivation questions, and a structured case built on a slide pack | Strategy& UK FAQ (official) |
| Later rounds | A second interview round; some experienced hires may face a third | Strategy& UK FAQ (official) |
Two honest caveats. First, the video screen may arrive bundled inside the online assessment rather than as a standalone link: PrepLounge describes the assessment stage as a numerical reasoning test, a games-based assessment and a video interview spread across roughly four weeks, while Intervyo lists the video interview as its own stage in mid-autumn. Second, publishers disagree because offices disagree, and CaseStar notes the format varies by region and entry route. Your invitation is the spec sheet.
What the recorded round looks like where it runs
The reported picture, with each piece attributed:
- One candidate account reports eight questions in about twelve minutes. It does not say whether every item was a recorded response or whether the format holds outside that office and cycle, so treat it as a single unverified data point.
- Intervyo’s Strategy& guide describes an on-demand video interview with one-take answers, roughly 60 to 90 seconds of preparation and two to three minutes of recording per answer, and advises candidates to signpost structure explicitly.
- PrepLounge’s firm guide places a video interview inside the online assessment battery rather than as a separate round.
None of this is official. Strategy& publishes no verified question count, preparation window, answer length or retry rule for a video stage, and does not name the platform. Assume one take per answer and rehearse against the tightest reported timings. For the mechanics that stay constant across one-way platforms, see how HireVue-style recorded interviews work.
The themes reported prompts cluster into
Putting the candidate account and prep publishers together, reported and representative prompts sort into five themes:
- Firm motivation: why strategy consulting rather than a broader professional-services route, and why Strategy& rather than a pure-play strategy house or a general PwC role. Every source puts some version of this first, and it is where generic answers fail.
- Leadership and teamwork: a time you led without formal authority, handled conflict inside a group, or contributed to a team outcome. Strategy& names five values (act with integrity, make a difference, care, work together, reimagine the possible), so stories showing collaboration and integrity land better than solo heroics.
- Data interpretation and synthesis: turning a large analysis into one actionable recommendation, or a time you decided with incomplete information.
- Commercial awareness: a recent market shift traced through to the decision it creates for a specific kind of client, rather than a summary of the news itself.
- Personal fit: your background, your motivations, and which part of Strategy&’s work you are targeting.
Three representative practice prompts built on those themes: “Choose a recent market shift and explain one decision it creates for a retailer”, “Tell us about a time you turned a large analysis into one actionable recommendation”, and “Why Strategy& rather than another strategy firm or a broader PwC role?” For a wider bank of prompts, see common HireVue interview questions, and for a story skeleton that fits the format, the STAR method for recorded answers.
Worked answer: from analysis to one recommendation
Here is an original practice answer to a representative synthesis prompt: tell us about a time you turned a large analysis into one actionable recommendation. It is a coaching example, not a claimed Strategy& prompt.
“Our university sustainability group collected hundreds of comments on campus food waste, and the first draft presented twelve unrelated ideas. I grouped the comments by where waste occurred, matched them to kitchen weight data and found that late-evening overproduction accounted for most avoidable volume. I reduced the recommendation to one four-week test: smaller final batches with a visible refill promise, tracked by item and time. I showed why awareness campaigns would not address production decisions and gave the catering manager a success threshold. The pilot cut measured evening waste while keeping stock-outs within the agreed limit. I learned that synthesis is not compressing every finding into a slide; it is selecting the evidence that changes a decision and making the next test executable.”
Why it works: it opens on the decision, shows the prioritisation logic, names what was deliberately excluded, and ends on a measured result plus a transferable lesson. That is the shape a strategy screen rewards, whether or not the platform is HireVue.
Reading a strong answer is not the same skill as producing one into a lens with a prep timer running. The only honest test of whether your structure survives the clock is to run answers under real conditions, one take, and review what actually came out.
How to prepare in the week you have
- Verify your own pipeline first. Work out whether you face a standalone video link, recorded items inside a larger assessment, or no video stage at all, and check which platform the invitation names.
- Write the why-Strategy& answer before anything else. Anchor it to the firm’s strategy-through-execution positioning inside the PwC network, a specific practice or sector you can name, and one piece of first-hand evidence, then cut every sentence that would also be true of an MBB firm or generic PwC.
- Build five or six distinct stories across the themes above. One story stretched across four prompts is audible from the first answer.
- Rehearse on camera under a real clock. Run a practice run with the Strategy& preset, which stays editable, and your first interview is free with a score and verdict on the run.
- Fix the room before the answers: quiet, front light, lens at eye level, clean audio. The setup and technical checklist covers the full pass.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Strategy& video screen confirmed as HireVue?
No. A one-way video stage is candidate-reported for some applicants, but the platform is not confirmed by Strategy& or PwC. A secondary guide calls it HireVue-style, which describes the format, not the vendor.
Are there eight questions?
One candidate account reports eight questions in about twelve minutes, but it does not establish that every item was recorded or that other offices match. Read your own invitation rather than importing a number.
Will I have case interviews?
Official UK material describes case and fit interviews after the online assessment, including a structured case built on a slide pack. Case solving is the core of the live rounds and a separate skill this article deliberately does not teach.
Can I re-record an answer?
Nothing official is published, and one prep publisher reports one-take answers. Assume a single take unless your instructions say otherwise.
How should I differentiate Strategy& in my answers?
Explain why front-end strategy work combined with the relevant PwC network capabilities matters for the client problems you want to work on. Describing Strategy& as generic PwC consulting, or as an MBB hedge, is the reported failure mode.
