Oliver Wyman HireVue Interview: Questions and Process

Oliver Wyman's recorded video screen is reported at some offices, on HireVue or Phenom by candidate reports. Format, prompts and honest prep.

HireVue Practice Team · Sep 20, 2026 · 9 min read

Oliver Wyman is a management consulting firm built around deep industry specialisation, and its own careers material describes a selection process of conversational and case interviews. A prerecorded video screen sits in front of those live rounds in some early-career pipelines. Candidates have reported it under different platform names: a 2020 PrepLounge thread describes a HireVue invitation for Oliver Wyman Iberia, while a March 2026 thread describes a recorded one-way video assessment running on Phenom for an entry-level consultant role. Oliver Wyman publishes no question count, timer or retry rule for any video stage, so treat every format detail in this guide as reported, and treat your invitation email as the final authority.

TL;DR

  • Oliver Wyman’s official interview guidance describes a mix of conversational and case interviews. A recorded video screen, where used, is the filter in front of them.
  • Video screening is reported in some early-career pipelines, not all. Reported platforms include HireVue and Phenom, so do not assume the vendor.
  • No official or verified universal spec exists for question count, prep time, answer length or retakes. Publisher reports describe roughly five to seven prompts and 15 to 30 minutes in total.
  • Reported prompts skew fit: why consulting, why Oliver Wyman, resume walkthrough, leadership, personal impact, teamwork and handling challenges. One publisher also reports a mini-case or estimation flavour.
  • The real filter is specificity. Coaches and candidates agree that a generic motivation answer reads badly on a recording.
  • This article covers the video screen only. Live case solving is a different craft and belongs to later rounds.

First, check which Oliver Wyman process you are in

Oliver Wyman hires into a generalist consulting core plus specialist and industry-aligned tracks. Its expertise page lists practices spanning financial services, transportation, health and life sciences, energy, retail and consumer goods, and private equity, alongside capabilities such as digital, risk management and operations. The office and programme you applied to determine the sequence, and recruiting varies by geography.

The video question matters most for early-career candidates, because recorded-screen reports cluster around entry-level consultant pipelines. If your invitation names HireVue, Phenom or another one-way platform, this article applies. If your process moves straight to scheduled interviews, skip ahead: live case preparation is a different job, and this site deliberately stays out of it.

Where a recorded round sits in the funnel

No single source maps the whole funnel, so this table combines the official careers page with prep publishers and candidate reports. The middle row is the only one this article is about.

Stage What happens Where the evidence comes from
Application Office, programme and role chosen up front Oliver Wyman careers site
Online assessment A timed reasoning test is reported in some pipelines; one coach describes numerical, verbal and logical reasoning for Oliver Wyman Case-Prep citing Glassdoor reports; PrepLounge thread
Recorded video screen One-way recorded answers, reported on HireVue and on Phenom in different pipelines Candidate reports on PrepLounge; GraduatesFirst
First live round Roughly an hour mixing fit questions with a case Case-Prep firm guide
Final round Two to four interviews with senior staff; a written case or Excel task is reported in some offices Case-Prep firm guide
Official framing Oliver Wyman describes “a mix of conversational and case interviews” Oliver Wyman interview preparation page

Two honest caveats. First, the video screen and the online assessment may arrive bundled or separately depending on office; the 2026 Phenom report describes video questions inside a broader assessment. Second, publishers disagree on details because offices disagree, so your own invitation is the spec sheet.

What the recorded round looks like where it runs

The reported picture, with each piece attributed:

  • A candidate on PrepLounge in March 2026 described an entry-level video assessment on Phenom: about 15 minutes, two short opening questions, then five video questions. Coaches on the thread called it mainly behavioural, covering motivation, teamwork, handling challenges and why Oliver Wyman specifically.
  • A September 2020 PrepLounge thread records a HireVue invitation for Oliver Wyman Iberia, with coaches predicting fit prompts: resume walkthrough, why consulting, why the company, leadership, personal impact and entrepreneurial drive.
  • GraduatesFirst describes a first-round video interview of about 30 minutes, often provided by HireVue, mixing behavioural, motivation, experience and resume questions, with a brief case-study-style question possible for some roles.
  • Intervyo’s Oliver Wyman pack reports five to six questions with 30 to 60 seconds of preparation and 90 to 120 seconds of recording per answer, no retakes, and a multi-day completion window after the online assessment.

None of this is official. Oliver Wyman publishes no verified question count, preparation window, answer length or retry rule for the video stage, and reports differ by office and year. The timer on your screen when the invitation opens is the only one that counts. For the platform mechanics that stay constant across employers, see how HireVue works.

The themes reported prompts cluster into

Putting candidate reports and prep publishers together, the prompts sort into six recurring themes:

  1. Firm motivation: why consulting, why Oliver Wyman, and which practice area or office you are targeting. This is the prompt every source puts first, and the one where generic answers fail.
  2. Resume narrative: walk me through your background, or introduce yourself. The test is a coherent thread, not a chronological list.
  3. Leadership and personal impact: a time you led without formal authority, persuaded people, or drove an initiative you are proud of.
  4. Teamwork under difficulty: handling challenges, disagreement inside a team, or a setback you helped recover from.
  5. Commercial awareness and judgment: a publisher reports prompts about industry trends and business diagnostics, plus estimation-style questions for some roles.
  6. Self-direction and curiosity: what you pursue, how you learn, and how you approach problems with incomplete information.

A recorded screen rewards what Oliver Wyman says its interviews assess: how you approach unstructured problems, use evidence, ask the right questions and communicate clearly. On camera, that means stating your point first, then supporting it. For a wider bank of prompts, see common HireVue interview questions, and for a story skeleton that fits the format, the STAR method for HireVue answers.

Worked answer: challenging a team’s framing

Here is an original practice answer to a representative fit prompt: tell us about a time you challenged a team’s framing without formal authority.

“In a consulting competition, our team assumed a bicycle-share operator’s problem was low awareness and began designing a marketing campaign. I compared station availability with trip data and saw that the busiest neighbourhoods were empty during evening demand. I asked the team to pause creative work and framed the issue as reliability rather than awareness. To avoid sounding dismissive, I showed the pattern, proposed two tests and invited the teammate leading marketing to shape the customer survey. We recommended rebalancing incentives and a small targeted campaign only after availability improved. The judges highlighted the operational diagnosis, and our team placed second. My contribution was challenging the starting question with evidence while keeping the colleague who owned the original idea central to the revised solution.”

Why it works: it shows dissent delivered as evidence, a concrete influence move, and a result where the team, not just the speaker, won. It names what others contributed, which is exactly the candour consulting interviewers listen for.

Reading a strong answer is not the same skill as producing one into a lens with a prep timer running. The only honest test of whether your structure survives the clock is to run answers under real conditions, one take, and review what actually came out.

How to prepare in the week you have

  • Verify your own pipeline first. Read the invitation twice and work out whether you face a standalone video link, recorded answers inside a larger assessment, or both, and on which platform.
  • Write the why-Oliver-Wyman answer before anything else. Anchor it to a specific practice or industry strength, a piece of first-hand evidence, and a personal reason, then cut every sentence that would also be true of a rival firm. For how this plays at a peer firm, see the EY-Parthenon HireVue guide.
  • Build five or six distinct stories across the themes above. One story stretched across four prompts is audible from the first answer.
  • Rehearse on camera under a real clock. Run the practice tool or start with the Oliver Wyman preset, which stays editable, and your first interview is free with a score and verdict on the run.
  • Fix the room before the answers: quiet, front light, lens at eye level, clean audio. The setup and technical checklist covers the full pass.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Oliver Wyman always use HireVue?

No. Prerecorded screens are candidate-reported in some pipelines, and different reports name different platforms, including HireVue and Phenom. Official Oliver Wyman material does not establish universal use of any vendor.

How many questions should I expect?

There is no verified count. Reported figures range from five video questions in a 15-minute assessment to five or six prompts in a longer sitting. Read your own invitation rather than importing a number.

Will the video round include a case?

Reported prompts are mostly motivational and behavioural. One publisher reports estimation or business-judgment questions for some roles, but detailed case work is officially associated with the live interviews, not the recorded screen.

Can you re-record an answer?

Not published anywhere official. One publisher reports no retakes per question. Assume one take unless your instructions say otherwise.

What does Oliver Wyman look for in the screen?

The firm’s own interview page says it assesses how you approach unstructured challenges, use data, apply common sense, ask the right questions and communicate ideas. In a recorded answer, that translates to a clear opening claim, structured support and a concrete result.
