Standard Chartered HireVue Interview: Questions and Process

The Standard Chartered video interview is a reported HireVue round of three to six behavioural prompts scored on its valued behaviours. Format and timings.

HireVue Practice Team · Sep 20, 2026 · 8 min read

The Standard Chartered video interview is a one-way recorded round: a question sits on screen while a reported 30 to 60 seconds of preparation counts down, then the camera records an answer most guides cap at two to three minutes. Secondary sources place it after the bank’s online assessments and before a virtual assessment centre, and the two prep publishers that name a platform both say HireVue. What separates Standard Chartered is the scoring lens: its careers site names three valued behaviours, and reported prompts map to them. Treat every number here as reported. The bank does not publish one global configuration, its hiring spans many markets and programmes, and your invitation email is the only authority on count, timers and retries.

TL;DR

  • Reported shape: three to six questions, roughly 30 to 60 seconds of prep, two to three minutes of recording per answer.
  • Reported prompts are behavioural and map to the valued behaviours: Do the right thing, Never settle, Better together.
  • One prompt, adapting to a sudden change, is directly candidate-reported. Most other lists are inferred from the values.
  • Guides name HireVue, but the configuration varies by programme and region. Your invitation settles it.
  • The bank’s stated purpose is driving commerce and prosperity through its unique diversity: answers where a different perspective changed the decision fit that lens.

Where the video round sits in the process

Sources agree the recorded round follows automated screening, but they describe different test batteries in the middle, which vary by stream and region. One guide (getsmartresume) reports Pymetrics games plus a situational judgement test built on the valued behaviours before the video invitation. Another (careertestprep) reports aptitude tests for some streams and describes the video stage itself as HireVue or a similar platform. Some routes may place the stages differently or skip the recorded round; nothing here overrides your invitation.

Stage What happens Reported detail
Application CV, eligibility questions, programme and geography choice Automated screening reported before a human reads the CV
Online assessments Games and judgement screens Pymetrics games and a valued behaviours SJT (getsmartresume); aptitude tests for some streams (careertestprep)
Video interview One-way recorded answers, this guide’s subject Reported at three to six prompts; HireVue named by both guides
Assessment centre Case study, group exercise, final interview Reported as a half-day virtual event in graduate routes

The three behaviours the round is scored against

Standard Chartered’s careers page states its purpose as driving commerce and prosperity through its unique diversity, pairs it with the brand promise “here for good”, and names three valued behaviours that express how employees deliver it. Prep publishers report that video interview questions are built to evidence these behaviours, so name the behaviour your story proves, then prove it.

Valued behaviour What the bank says Reported prompt shapes
Do the right thing Doing the right thing by clients and stakeholders Flagging a risk, protecting a client or market, honesty when it costs you
Never settle Choosing to never settle Adapting to sudden change, improving a process, raising quality under pressure
Better together Making the connections that make us better together A different market or cultural perspective improving your decision

The footprint across Asia, Africa and the Middle East makes cross-market context relevant, but a strong answer does not exoticise those regions. Show which market, customer or colleague perspective changed the evidence or the design. That is diversity as a decision input, not decoration. The structure underneath stays the STAR framework for HireVue answers: situation, task, action, result.

Reported Standard Chartered video interview questions

These prompts are reported by candidates and prep publishers, or built as original rehearsal exercises. They are practice material, not a leaked script, and your set will vary by programme.

  • “Tell us about a time you had to adapt to a sudden change. How did you handle it?” The one directly reported prompt (getsmartresume), mapped to Never settle.
  • “How do you handle conflicting deadlines?” Reported by the same guide.
  • “Why Standard Chartered, and why this division or geography?” Reported as a recurring motivational ask (careertestprep).
  • Describe a time a different market or cultural perspective improved your decision. An original exercise targeting Better together: name the assumption it challenged and the concrete change you made.
  • Tell us about a process you improved without weakening a control. An original exercise for Never settle in a bank: speed up the work while keeping conduct, security and accountability intact.
  • Describe a time you protected client or market integrity while still moving work forward. An original exercise for Do the right thing.

A wider prompt bank lives in our list of HireVue interview questions. Prepare six to eight stories and tag each with the behaviour it proves, so no anecdote gets recycled twice in one set.

Sample answer: a Better together story

This is an original coaching example, not a claimed Standard Chartered prompt.

“My project team designed a digital payment survey for international students and planned to ask which app they preferred. A teammate who had recently arrived from another country pointed out that the main barrier was not preference but whether local identity checks accepted their documents. I asked her to review the survey journey, interviewed three student advisers and split the questions into access, trust and usage. That change revealed that several respondents had never reached the point of choosing an app. We presented the university with a document-readiness guide and a referral route, not another product comparison. Adviser follow-up questions fell during the next intake. I learned that diversity improves decisions when another perspective is allowed to redefine the problem, not merely comment on a solution already chosen.”

Why it works: one situation, three owned decisions, a measurable result, and the behaviour named in the last line. It shows Better together as a mechanism that changed the evidence, not a compliment about working with diverse colleagues.

Answers that read well can still fall apart on a countdown. The honest test is delivering yours under real conditions: run your first interview free with Standard Chartered selected and you get a score and a verdict on the run.

Timings, retries and what only your invitation settles

Reported timers cluster tightly: about 30 to 60 seconds of prep and two to three minutes of recording, with getsmartresume reporting three to five questions and careertestprep reporting four to six. One guide advises rehearsing answers of one to two minutes so you land before the cap rather than against it. Under a minute reads thin; hitting the wall reads unstructured. The countdown and submit mechanics are covered in how the HireVue platform works.

On retries the evidence runs out: no source we reviewed confirms whether re-records are allowed, so treat a single take as the default and let your invitation screen decide. The same applies to deadlines and to whether every region and programme uses the stage at all. Open the invitation the day it lands, run the HireVue setup and technical checklist while there is slack, and record well before any stated cut-off.

One caution on scoring claims: getsmartresume reports that the platform transcribes answers while human recruiters grade the content. Treat that as a publisher’s description, not employer policy, and assume words and structure carry the score.

What strong Standard Chartered answers do that weak ones skip

  • Name the behaviour early, then evidence it. “This was a Never settle moment” in the first line beats two minutes of implying it.
  • Use diversity as decision input: show which market, customer or colleague perspective changed the evidence, never as decoration.
  • Never settle with the control intact: improve speed or experience while preserving conduct, security and accountability.
  • Connect the network by mechanism: name the geography, the client need and the local-plus-global capability the role coordinates, instead of praising global scale alone.
  • Choose your segment and geography before you record, so the why-this-bank answer could only be about Standard Chartered. The same discipline applies at peer banks; see how it plays out in the HSBC video interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Standard Chartered publish its HireVue questions?

No employer question bank was found. Most available detail is candidate-reported or inferred from the valued behaviours, so treat lists as rehearsal material.

What timings are reported?

Secondary guides suggest roughly 30 to 60 seconds of preparation and two to three minutes to answer, across three to six prompts. Configurations vary by programme and region.

What are the valued behaviours?

Do the right thing, Never settle and Better together, per the bank’s careers page.

How do I make a network answer specific?

Name the geography, the client need and the local-plus-global capability the role coordinates. “SC operates in 50 markets” alone is a compliment, not a mechanism.

Is every Standard Chartered route using this stage?

Not confirmed. The recorded round is reported in graduate routes in some regions; whether it applies universally is unknown, so follow your invitation.
