HSBC HireVue Interview: Questions, Values and Format
The HSBC video interview is reported as a one-way round of about 3 to 5 questions built on HSBC's three values. Format, timings and reported prompts.

The HSBC video interview is a one-way recorded round: a question sits on screen while a countdown gives you a reported 30 seconds to think, then the camera records against a limit most reports put between two and three minutes. Prep publishers place it after the online assessments and before the assessment centre HSBC calls an Experience Day. What separates HSBC is the marking scheme: its careers site says interviews assess your compatibility with its values, and prep publishers map almost every reported prompt to three of them. Treat every number here as reported; your invitation email is the only authority on timings, count and retries.
TL;DR
- Reported shape: 3 to 5 questions, about 30 seconds of prep, two to three minutes of recording per answer.
- Every reported prompt maps to Dependable, Open or Connected. Name the value in your answer, then prove it.
- Candidates report HireVue; HSBC’s careers page names Modern Hire as its on-demand video partner for some roles. Your invitation settles it.
- One submitted take is the reported default, with practice attempts allowed first.
- HSBC says assessments run “within a fixed number of days, as specified in the email”. Open the link on day one.
- HSBC’s GenAI rules allow practising with AI but forbid generating responses during recorded interviews.
Is the HSBC video interview HireVue or Modern Hire?
Candidate reports and every major prep publisher describe HSBC’s recorded round as a HireVue. HSBC’s own careers page names Modern Hire as its on-demand video partner, used for some roles instead of telephone interviews, and describes the same format: pre-set questions answered on camera at a time that suits you, no interviewer listening live. Which logo appears matters less than it looks; the format and scored skills are identical either way.
Where the video round sits in HSBC’s process
Sources agree on the order but differ on the test battery in the middle, which varies by programme and region:
| Stage | What happens | Reported detail |
|---|---|---|
| Online application | CV, eligibility questions, programme choice | No cover letter for most graduate roles; no switching programme mid-process (FinalRoundAI) |
| Online assessments | Scenario and reasoning screens | Cappfinity immersive assessment of 38 questions (FinalRoundAI); SHL tests (OphyAI); values and job simulation (GraduatesFirst) |
| Video interview | One-way recorded answers, this guide’s subject | Reported at 3 to 5 questions, 1 to 2 weeks after the tests |
| Experience Day | Assessment centre: group exercise, case study, competency interview | Two to three hours, virtual or in person (FinalRoundAI) |
| Final interview and offer | Senior stakeholder conversation for some roles | Full UK timeline reported at six to ten weeks |
The earlier screens are a separate preparation; everything below is the recorded round. For a rehearsal under a real countdown before opening the live link, run your first interview free with HSBC selected: it comes back with a score and a verdict on the run.
The three words HSBC scores against
OphyAI and FinalRoundAI both report that HSBC’s competency questions are scored against three stated values. A wider set is also reported (“we value difference”, “we succeed together”, “we take responsibility”), but the trio below carries the interview.
| HSBC value | What publishers say it means | Reported prompt shapes |
|---|---|---|
| Dependable | Doing the right thing, being trustworthy, delivering on commitments | Delivering under pressure, keeping a commitment despite obstacles, flagging a risk when it was uncomfortable |
| Open | Receptive to different ideas, cultures and perspectives | Feedback that changed your approach, working across different backgrounds, changing your mind |
| Connected | Building relationships across teams, locations and communities | Connecting different people to a shared goal, collaborating across time zones, aligning stakeholders |
OphyAI’s tactical advice is worth stealing: say out loud which value your story proves, because interviewers score against these labels. That fits the STAR framework for HireVue answers, which mirrors the structure HSBC prescribes: situation, task, action, result.
Reported HSBC video interview questions
These prompts are reported by candidates and prep publishers. They are rehearsal material, not a leaked script, and your set will vary by programme.
- Why HSBC, and why this business line? Reported as the standard opener (OphyAI, GraduatesFirst).
- Tell me about yourself, and a time you worked in a team toward a common goal (GraduatesFirst).
- A time you demonstrated dependability under pressure (FinalRoundAI, OphyAI).
- A situation where being open to a different perspective changed your approach (FinalRoundAI, OphyAI).
- A time you connected people from different backgrounds to reach a shared goal (FinalRoundAI).
- A time you had to adapt to a significant change (OphyAI).
A wider prompt bank lives in our list of HireVue interview questions. For HSBC, prepare six to eight stories (OphyAI’s count) and tag each with the value it proves.
Sample answer: a Connected story
“In my final year I co-ran a peer-mentoring scheme for first-year international students in our economics department. Sign-up was high but attendance was weak: sessions felt designed for home students, at times that clashed with part-time jobs.
My task was to make the scheme actually used. I recruited four mentors who had arrived as international students themselves, moved two sessions online across time zones, and paired mentees by subject interest. Best of all, mentees co-designed one session a month, so topics came from them instead of us guessing.
Attendance more than doubled by spring, and the department kept the pairing model the following year.
That is what Connected means to me: the fix was not louder promotion, it was bringing the people the scheme was for into the design.”
Why it works: one situation, three owned decisions, a measurable result, the value named in the last line.
Sample answer: why HSBC, why this programme
“Mine is a corridor answer. HSBC was founded in Hong Kong in 1865, is headquartered in London, and still earns most of its revenue in Asia. That East-West shape is what I want early in my career. My family runs a small import business, and I have watched one delayed trade payment hold up a container for a week. That is what made commercial banking real to me.
I applied for Commercial Banking because it sits with mid-sized trading companies rather than only the largest clients. In my internship at a freight forwarder I reconciled shipping documents for exactly those firms, and the fastest-growing ones had banks that understood their routes.
Finally, mobility. HSBC’s graduate scheme is reported to build international movement into the career path, and I want a working life where moving between markets is normal. Corridor, programme, mobility: that is why I put HSBC first.”
Why it works: a personal reason for the East-West angle, a named division, and zero prestige adjectives that fit any bank.
Timings, retakes and the deadline that actually binds you
Reported timings cluster tightly: about 30 seconds of prep and two to three minutes to record, with 150 seconds a commonly reported cap. Aim for 90 to 120 seconds of content, FinalRoundAI’s recommended band. Under a minute reads thin; hitting the wall reads unstructured. The countdown and submit mechanics are covered in how the HireVue platform works.
On retakes, treat a single take as the default. GraduatesFirst reports you can practise first but submit only one response per question, and FinalRoundAI reports no re-record once you begin. Some requisitions reportedly allow a retry, so your invitation screen outranks anything here. What happens after you submit is covered in HireVue retakes, results and scoring.
The deadline is the quiet killer. HSBC says you complete the assessment “within a fixed number of days, as specified in the email”, and FinalRoundAI reports a typical window of three to five days. Open it the day it lands, run the HireVue setup and technical checklist while there is slack, and record a full day before the cut-off.
Your face, your words and AI
One widely read guide (GraduatesFirst) still tells candidates the interview uses AI to track facial expressions and infer mood. Treat that cautiously: SHRM reported in February 2021 that HireVue had removed facial analysis from its assessments, announced that January after language analysis proved the stronger predictor. Assume words and delivery carry the score, not micro-expressions.
The AI rule that does bind you is HSBC’s own. Its careers page publishes a generative AI policy: you may use GenAI to research the bank, structure your CV and practise answers, but not to generate responses during live or recorded interviews. Draft with whatever tools you like; on camera the words have to be yours.
What strong HSBC answers do that weak ones skip
- Name the value early, then evidence it. “This was a Dependable moment” in the first line beats three minutes of implying it.
- A why-HSBC answer that could only be about HSBC: a named programme, one line on what that division does, one experience of yours that touches it.
- Six to eight distinct stories across the three values, so no anecdote gets recycled across a five-question set.
- Results with numbers you own, and an ending that lands before the timer in a room already checked for audio, light and bandwidth.
