Wells Fargo HireVue Interview: Questions and Process
The Wells Fargo video interview is a reported on-demand recorded round on some early-career routes. Format, timing, reported questions and retakes.

Wells Fargo candidates report an on-demand recorded video stage on several early-career and business routes, including Corporate and Investment Banking, but the bank’s public hiring guide promises no universal video round and names no vendor. Its official line is that interviews vary by business group and may run by phone, in a group or one-to-one. Reports commonly describe two to five recorded questions, about 30 seconds to prepare and up to two minutes to answer; retake accounts conflict. Your invitation email is the only authority on platform, count, timing and attempts; everything below is labelled reported.
TL;DR
- Reported shape: most reports cluster on four to five questions, wider accounts run two to six; about 30 seconds of prep and up to two minutes per answer.
- Wells Fargo names no vendor. HireVue is what candidates and prep publishers report; your invitation screen settles it.
- The recorded round is route-dependent, not universal. Some programmes start with a recruiter screen or live interview.
- Retake reports conflict. Several publishers report up to three attempts with the last auto-submitting; do not count on it.
- Wells Fargo rebrands STAR as the situation, behavior and outcome (SBO) method. Structure answers that way.
- Reported prompts skew toward motivation, integrity and stakeholder judgment rather than market news. Finance routes may add a light technical.
Is the Wells Fargo video interview actually HireVue?
Probably, on the routes that have one, but Wells Fargo will not confirm it. Its careers material confirms interviews can be telephone, video or online and publishes no question set or platform name. GraduatesFirst names HireVue as provider, candidate forums describe HireVue invitations on CIB summer analyst tracks, and ResumeAdapter layers the video screen as commonly reported rather than official. The practical position matches other big banks: a countdown, a camera, no live interviewer. Do not promise yourself a platform the invitation may contradict.
Where the recorded round sits in Wells Fargo’s process
Wells Fargo publishes an official six-step sequence; candidate reporting fills in the interview step:
| Stage | What happens | Reported detail |
|---|---|---|
| Get Started | Search open roles and create an account | Official step; target one business group first |
| Apply | Submit the application | A Workday tenant serves experienced and campus roles (ResumeAdapter) |
| Review | A recruiter or hiring manager reviews the profile | Official step; Wells Fargo contacts candidates whose background matches |
| Interview | Varies by business group: phone, group or one-to-one | Banking-route candidates report a recorded video screen or roughly 30-minute phone screen here |
| Consider an Offer | Compare culture, benefits, reputation and compensation | Official step; candidates commonly report a background check before an offer clears |
| Support | Ask questions throughout | Official step; Wells Fargo frames the process as two-sided |
Read your own invitation loosely against this map. Finbound reports many high-volume early-careers programmes place the video after the written screen, other paths start with a recruiter call, and 24 to 48-hour completion windows are common enough to plan around. If your route does send a recording, rehearse under a real countdown first: run your first interview free with Wells Fargo selected, four questions and one take each.
What Wells Fargo’s own guidance tells you
Wells Fargo publishes behavioral-interview guidance with one wrinkle: ResumeAdapter reports the bank rebrands STAR as the situation, behavior and outcome method, and tells candidates to answer with it. An SBO story is the same skeleton you already know: set the situation, explain what you did, land the outcome. Our STAR framework for HireVue answers maps directly onto it.
Voomer summarises Wells Fargo’s published Company Expectations as five that apply to every employee, plus a sixth for managers:
| Company Expectation | What it asks you to show | Reported prompt shapes |
|---|---|---|
| Do What’s Right | Ownership of a problem, standards held under pressure | Integrity definitions, fixing a mistake, doing the right thing unobserved |
| Be Great at Execution | Goals tracked and delivered on time | Deadline pressure, prioritisation, a result you owned end to end |
| Embrace Candor | Honest feedback given and taken | Disagreement handled directly, a hard conversation you initiated |
| Learn and Grow | Feedback sought and applied | A failure or obstacle you worked through |
| Champion Inclusion | Trust built across difference | Teamwork with a perspective you lacked |
Pick the expectation your story genuinely demonstrates, then let the story carry it.
Reported Wells Fargo video interview questions
These prompts are reported by candidates and prep publishers. They are rehearsal material, not a leaked script, and your set will vary by programme.
- Why Wells Fargo, and why this business line or city (Road to Offer, Finbound).
- Tell me about yourself (Finbound, Voomer).
- What do you consider your greatest achievement? (Road to Offer).
- How would you define the importance of integrity? (Road to Offer).
- Describe your customer service philosophy (Road to Offer).
- A time you worked with a tough stakeholder, or handled a team conflict (GraduatesFirst, Road to Offer).
- On investment-banking, corporate banking and credit routes only: light technicals such as the three financial statements or the 5 C’s of credit, reported inside the recorded round (Road to Offer).
One notable absence: Road to Offer reports none of its checked sources surfaced a market-news question, separating Wells Fargo’s set from the markets prompts reported at other banks. A wider prompt bank lives in our list of HireVue interview questions. This guide covers the recorded screen only, not assessments or live technical rounds.
Sample answer: a tough stakeholder story
An original coaching example from our Wells Fargo research, built to show judgment:
“On a university consulting project, our sponsor kept requesting new analyses two days before each review, while the team believed the scope was already fixed. I asked for a short call and learned that the sponsor needed evidence for a board question that had not appeared in the original brief. I translated that need into three decisions, showed which analysis answered each one and proposed replacing a low-value appendix rather than adding work. We agreed a written priority list and a cutoff for new requests. The final meeting answered the board’s concern on time, and the sponsor used the same decision list for the next project. I learned to treat late requests as information to clarify, not behavior to resist automatically.”
Why it works: the disagreement is described precisely, the other person’s need is surfaced instead of blamed, and the fix is a durable process. It is a coaching example, not a claimed Wells Fargo question.
That is still only a script on a page. The skill that transfers is saying it once, cleanly, while a countdown runs and nobody nods, so run your answers under real conditions first:
Timings, retakes and the window that binds you
Reported timings cluster around 30 seconds of preparation and about two minutes of recording, with some reports running prep up to 120 seconds and answers up to three. Our registry’s 30-second prep and 120-second cap is a sensible practice target, not a promise. Aim for 90 to 120 seconds of content: under a minute reads thin, hitting the wall reads unstructured. The countdown and submit mechanics are covered in how the HireVue platform works.
On retakes, accounts genuinely conflict. Road to Offer and ResumeAdapter report up to three attempts per question, the third auto-submitting, while other candidate accounts disagree and Wells Fargo publishes nothing. Plan for one good take and let the invitation screen outrank every published figure; what happens after submission is covered in HireVue retakes, results and scoring.
The deadline is the part that binds you. Finbound reports 24 to 48-hour completion windows are common enough to plan for, and invitations can land mid-semester. Read yours on day one, run the HireVue setup and technical checklist while there is slack, and record well before the cut-off.
What strong Wells Fargo answers do that weak ones skip
- A why-Wells-Fargo answer built on the business line’s customers and core work, not the bank’s size as a slogan. Finbound’s line is blunt: a commercial banking answer that only talks bulge-bracket M&A prestige is a miss, and a CIB answer that cannot say why Wells Fargo over another US bank is a miss.
- Conflict told through the shared objective: what the stakeholder needed, the evidence or conversation you introduced, the relationship after. Casting the other person as the problem is the weak version.
- One proof point per answer, delivered in the first sentence and stopped cleanly. Reviewers hear slow openings all day.
- For finance routes, one accurate linkage in plain language, such as net income flowing into cash flow from operations and retained earnings. Rushed jargon loses to a simple correct path.
- No promises to yourself about platform, question count or retakes that the invitation may contradict.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Wells Fargo applicant complete a video interview?
No. Recorded interviews are candidate-reported on several routes, while the official guide says formats vary by business group. Some paths start with a recruiter screen. Your invitation is authoritative.
How many questions are in a Wells Fargo recorded interview?
Reports cluster on four to five, with wider accounts running two to six. Our registry uses four. The live count varies by programme and cycle.
Can I retake a Wells Fargo video answer?
Reports conflict. Several prep publishers report up to three attempts per question with the last auto-submitting; do not build your plan on it. Check the instructions shown before you start.
Are Wells Fargo video questions technical?
Most reported prompts are motivational and behavioral: integrity, customer focus, stakeholder judgment. Investment-banking, corporate banking and credit candidates report light technicals, so prepare for the responsibilities in your actual job description.
What should a why-Wells-Fargo answer include?
The customers and core work of the business line you applied to, plus one credible reason from your own experience. Scale becomes useful only when you explain what it enables for that customer.
