UBS HireVue Interview: Questions and Process

UBS's recorded video interview: the official process, reported HireVue and Sonru formats, the three culture keys, questions and honest prep.

HireVue Practice Team · Sep 20, 2026 · 9 min read

UBS confirms the recorded video stage exists but publishes almost nothing about its mechanics. Its early-careers page lists a pre-recorded interview after the online assessments, with advice to dress smartly, keep eye contact with the camera and be concise. It does not name a vendor, a question count or a time limit. Candidates fill that gap with reports of HireVue and Sonru across programmes, regions and years, and the reported numbers do not agree with each other. The research registry behind our practice set uses four questions, two minutes to prepare and two minutes to answer. Treat that as a realistic rehearsal shape, not a forecast: your invitation is the only reliable guide to the interface, the timers and the retake rules.

TL;DR

  • UBS’s official early-careers route runs application, online assessments, a pre-recorded video interview, then final-round interviews; the bank itself notes that stages differ by programme and region.
  • UBS does not publish the vendor, question count or timings. Candidates and prep publishers report HireVue and Sonru, with sets running from a handful of questions up to a reported seven on markets tracks.
  • Reported preparation windows run from about 30 seconds to two minutes, with reported answer windows up to two minutes. No source confirms retakes, so assume one take.
  • Reported prompts cluster on motivation, behavioural stories and division fit, with a reported stock pitch added on markets tracks.
  • UBS frames its culture through three keys: Pillars, Principles and Behaviors. Show one behaviour through a decision rather than reciting the labels.

Where the video interview sits in UBS’s process

The bank’s own how-to-apply page lays out a four-stage route for early careers, and the recorded round sits third:

Stage What the official page says What candidates report
Submit your materials Online application and CV; no cover letter in most regions CV plus eligibility questions
Online assessments Four types exist: verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning, inductive-logical reasoning and the UBS Culture Match; which ones you get depends on the business area; seven days to complete, no retakes Consistent with the official description
Pre-recorded interview “You might receive a link to record your video interview” after passing the assessments; dress smartly, keep eye contact, be concise Reported on graduate, internship and off-cycle routes, identified as HireVue or Sonru depending on programme and year
Final round Virtual or in-person interviews; UBS asks you to go beyond facts and figures Live interviews or a Super Day depending on the programme

Two official details matter beyond the sequence. First, UBS states that recruitment stages may differ by programme and region, which is the bank’s own confirmation that no universal format exists. Second, on the question of AI review, UBS says its people are the ones making decisions on video submissions. The wider pattern matches other banks: the Barclays recorded interview shows the same programme-by-programme variation.

The reported format, source by source

UBS publishes no mechanics, so every number below is reported rather than official:

Source Reported format
UBS official page A pre-recorded video interview after online assessments; no vendor, count or timing published
Road to Offer (2026 guide) HireVue across the Graduate Talent Program, internships and off-cycle roles; about 30 seconds to prepare, up to two minutes to answer, stretching to seven questions on markets tracks
Voomer (UBS Sonru guide) Sonru as the platform; around 30 seconds to prepare, around two minutes to answer, two to five questions, mostly behavioural
Our research registry Four questions, 120 seconds to prepare, 120 seconds to answer, drawn from five sourced prompt themes; a rehearsal condition, not a prediction

The spread is the honest answer. Reported sets are short, preparation time is tight and the answer window clusters around two minutes. Plan for a handful of questions, assume each take is final, and run through the setup and technical checklist before you open the real link.

What UBS is listening for: the three keys

UBS describes its culture through three keys to success. The Pillars are capital strength, simplification and efficiency, and risk management. The Principles are client centricity, connectivity and sustainable impact. The Behaviors are accountability with integrity, collaboration and innovation, expressed internally as take ownership, work as one UBS and improve every day.

For a recorded answer, the Behaviors are the most usable material, but only when they show up as evidence:

  • For take ownership, show the moment you stepped up and the consequence that followed.
  • For work as one UBS, show which person, idea or capability you connected and why the combined answer was better. Saying you enjoy teamwork is not evidence.
  • For improve every day, pair the change you made with the check or feedback loop that kept it dependable. UBS names both simplification and risk management as pillars, so an improvement story without a control reads as half an answer.

Division fit matters as much as values. UBS describes four client-facing businesses: Global Wealth Management, Personal and Corporate Banking, Asset Management and the Investment Bank, alongside Group Functions. Name the business you chose before you praise the brand, and anchor the choice in an actual client problem or type of work.

Reported and practice questions

The prompts below mix candidate-reported themes with original practice exercises built on the researched question bank. None is a claimed live question:

  • Why UBS, and why this business rather than another? Reported across prep publishers as the standard opener; wants one firm-specific reason plus one personal proof.
  • Tell us about a time you connected people or ideas to improve a result. Practice prompt built on the connectivity principle; show the gap, the connection you created and the observable change.
  • Describe an improvement you made without weakening an important control. Practice prompt built on the simplification and risk pillars.
  • A self-insight prompt such as tell me about yourself or something not on your resume. Reported by candidates on the Sonru route; keep it pointed at the division.
  • A commercial or markets prompt, reported up to a stock pitch with a buy, hold or sell view on markets tracks. Representative of the division-specific variation candidates describe.

For a wider rehearsal bank, our list of HireVue interview questions covers the same families. Five or six prepared stories, each tagged to one behaviour, cover almost every reported combination. Structure the behavioural ones with the STAR framework.

Building an answer that fits two minutes

Two minutes is roughly 260 to 300 spoken words, and shorter is fine. The structure that survives the clock is compressed STAR: ten to fifteen seconds of situation, your responsibility in one line, most of the time on the two or three actions you personally took, then a result and one lesson tied to the business.

Here is an original coaching example for the improvement prompt, built tight enough to land well inside the window:

“While coordinating expense approvals for a student conference, I found that volunteers copied the same information into a spreadsheet and an email, creating delays and mismatches. I mapped the fields the treasurer actually needed and built one structured request form, but kept final approval with the treasurer and restricted editing of the master sheet. I tested it on five historical requests, asked two volunteers to try it without instructions and fixed one ambiguous category before launch. Approval time fell from several days to one, while every payment still had a named reviewer and receipt. The experience taught me that useful simplification removes repetition without removing accountability.”

Why it works: the improvement is concrete, the control is preserved rather than skipped, and the close names the lesson without reciting a pillar. That shape only holds if you can run it under real conditions: an unseen prompt, a live countdown and one take. Rehearse exactly that with a free UBS practice run before your invitation arrives.

Mistakes that cost UBS candidates

  • A generic why-finance answer that never names the UBS business or the client need it serves. Division fit is the first thing a motivation answer is scored on.
  • Reciting the three keys instead of demonstrating one. Listing Pillars, Principles and Behaviors proves you read the page; one observable decision proves a behaviour.
  • Assuming a particular vendor, timer or retake rule before reading the invitation. Candidates report HireVue and Sonru across different programmes and years, and reported timings conflict.
  • Preparing only for motivation and behavioural prompts when your track is markets. Candidates on those tracks report a stock pitch inside the recorded set.
  • Spending the prep window writing sentences. With a reported 30 seconds on some routes, preparation is for choosing a story and three beats, not composing a script.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does UBS always use HireVue?

No universal vendor is confirmed. UBS does not name a platform, and candidate reports mention HireVue and Sonru across programmes, regions and years. Follow the link and instructions in your invitation rather than any published list.

How many questions are in a UBS recorded interview?

Reports vary. Prep publishers describe a handful of questions on most routes and up to seven on some markets tracks, while older Sonru reports describe two to five. Our practice set uses four as a rehearsal condition, not a prediction.

How long do I get to prepare and answer?

Reported preparation windows run from about 30 seconds to two minutes, and reported answer windows cluster around two minutes. The invitation you receive overrides every published figure.

Can I retake a UBS video answer?

Retakes are not consistently reported, so assume each take is final. What happens after submission is covered separately.

What should a why-UBS answer include?

Name the business area, one client or market problem that interests you, and evidence showing why that work fits your choices and skills. Generic praise for a global bank demonstrates none of the three.

  • Voomer: UBS Sonru interview questions: prep publisher reporting Sonru as the platform, around 30 seconds to prepare, around two minutes to answer, two to five questions and a mostly behavioural mix.

Note on sources: an eFinancialCareers round-up of HireVue questions at UBS, Barclays and Deutsche Bank returned a 403 block at check time, so nothing here relies on it. The vendor identifications above rest on the fetched prep publishers and candidate reporting they cite, since UBS does not name its platform. All timings, counts and question details are reported figures, not UBS-published facts.
