State Street HireVue Interview: Questions and Process

State Street's reported video round is named as Modern Hire, not HireVue. Reported format, question themes and the control mindset that wins.

HireVue Practice Team · Sep 20, 2026 · 8 min read

The strongest piece of State Street interview evidence names Modern Hire, not HireVue, so this page starts with a correction rather than a playbook. State Street publishes no interview guide of its own: no vendor name, no question count, no timer, no retake rule. What exists is a third-party internship guide describing a recorded round inside one pipeline, plus State Street’s own description of the institutional business your answers need to understand. Everything below is labelled reported unless it quotes State Street or HireVue directly, and your invitation email outranks every word on this page.

TL;DR

  • Platform: a third-party internship guide names Modern Hire for the recorded round. HireVue acquired Modern Hire in May 2023, but no source confirms a HireVue-branded State Street screen. Reported, programme-specific evidence only.
  • Reported format: three to five pre-recorded behavioural questions, about two minutes per answer.
  • Reported sequence: application, resume screen, the recorded round, then a Superday of two to three interviews. Offers reported at weeks 10 to 14.
  • Reported themes: career goals in financial services, why State Street, and strengths. Technology tracks may add a separate coding assessment.
  • The differentiator is naming the institutional client behind your work and showing control-minded ownership, not reciting custody trivia.
  • No employer-confirmed count, timer or retake rule exists. Plan for one clean take.

Is the State Street video interview actually HireVue?

Not on the available evidence. The clearest source, Extern’s State Street internship guide, places a digital video interview via Modern Hire between resume screening and a Superday on the internship pipeline. HireVue announced its acquisition of Modern Hire in May 2023, so a State Street screen could plausibly carry either brand depending on when the workflow was built, but no fetched source shows a HireVue-branded State Street interview. The honest statement is narrow: a recorded round is reported for at least one early-career route, the named vendor is Modern Hire, and everything else is unconfirmed. Our Modern Hire interview guide explains what the acquisition changed and what it did not. If your invitation names a different platform, or no recording at all, believe your invitation.

Where the recorded round sits in the reported process

The guide’s reported internship funnel, covering tracks such as Global Markets, Finance, Technology, Alpha, Global Advisors and Enterprise Risk, looks like this:

Stage What happens Reported detail
Application Track-specific listing on State Street’s careers site Rolling review reported; highest advancement inside the first 30 days of a posting
Resume screen Automated and recruiter filters Estimated 35 to 40 percent advance (third-party estimate, not employer data)
Digital video interview Recorded answers, this guide’s subject Modern Hire named; three to five behavioural prompts, two minutes each
Superday Two to three back-to-back interviews of 30 to 45 minutes Hiring managers, peers and senior leaders; STAR behavioural plus role-specific technical
Offer Decision reported at weeks 10 to 14 Strong interns positioned for the two-year Professional Development Program

Hold the map loosely. It is one guide’s account of one pipeline, vendors change between cycles, and experienced or non-US routes may differ entirely. What State Street does and why your answer must name the client

State Street describes itself as a global leader across investment servicing, markets and financing, and investment management, with about 11.5 percent of the world’s financial assets flowing through its doors every day. Its stated clients are asset managers and owners, insurance companies, official institutions and central banks, and its stated purpose is helping create better outcomes for the world’s investors and the people they serve. Scale figures on the same page: roughly 53,000 employees, more than 100 markets, 232 years of history, the fourth largest asset manager worldwide and $46.8 trillion of assets under custody or administration as of September 2024.

That profile tells you what a why-State-Street answer must do: identify the institutional client who depends on your function and the reliable outcome they need.

Business What the work protects Angle for your answer
Investment servicing Custody, accounting and administration records across 100 plus markets Data integrity, reconciliation and exception ownership
Markets Trading, financing, foreign exchange and research for institutions Liquidity, execution quality and disciplined risk reasoning
Investment management State Street Investment Management portfolios run to client mandates Long-term outcomes and suitability for the objective
Wealth services Advisory technology, custody and clearing on one platform Dependable systems that let advisors serve their own clients

The two traps the research flags are describing State Street as a retail bank, and answering as if every track is public-markets stock selection. A servicing candidate should talk about records, controls and handoffs; a markets candidate about institutional objectives and risk; a technology candidate about resilient systems inside a financial process.

Reported State Street video interview questions

The guide names three reported topic areas for the recorded round: career goals in financial services, why State Street, and strengths. The remaining prompts below are representative rehearsal material written for this research area, not a leaked script, and wording will vary.

  • Where do you want your career in financial services to go, and why does this track fit it (reported topic: career goals).
  • Why State Street rather than another custodian or asset manager (reported topic: motivation).
  • What are your strengths, with evidence (reported topic).
  • Tell us about a discrepancy you traced before it affected a downstream user (representative).
  • Why does institutional financial infrastructure interest you (representative).
  • Describe a dependable handoff you made across teams (representative).
  • A time you protected both the record and the person behind it while an exception stayed unresolved (representative, written for this guide).

For a wider bank of prompts, our list of HireVue practice questions covers the transferable set. Technology candidates should also expect a separate coding assessment; the guide reports CodeSignal or HackerRank, which sits outside the video round entirely.

Sample answer: tracing a discrepancy

An original coaching example from our State Street research, built to show control-minded ownership rather than recite the business:

“While reconciling registrations for a student conference, I found that the payment total exceeded the attendee list by one fee. Instead of adding a placeholder, I matched transaction references to form timestamps and found that a participant had paid after their browser timed out, so the registration never saved. I quarantined the unmatched amount, contacted the participant using the payment reference and asked the events lead to hold a place. After confirming consent, we restored the registration and issued the receipt. I then added a daily unmatched-payment report and a clear recovery message to the form. The participant attended, the accounts reconciled, and later failures were detected within a day. I learned that operational ownership means protecting both the record and the person behind it while the exception is unresolved.”

Why it works: detection, root cause, containment and a permanent control, with the downstream human named rather than sacrificed to a tidy number. The STAR framework for HireVue answers supplies the skeleton; the stewardship close is what makes it State Street-shaped.

A script on a page is not the skill that transfers. The skill is saying it once, cleanly, while a countdown runs and no interviewer nods back, so run your answers under those real conditions before the invitation arrives:

Timings, retakes and what you cannot know yet

No employer-confirmed question count, preparation window, answer limit or retry policy for State Street appears in any fetched source. The two-minute response figure is a reported benchmark from a single guide, so practise to it as a discipline rather than a promised cap. Platform uncertainty is normal during a vendor transition: HireVue retakes, results and scoring covers what is generally known about submit mechanics, and your invitation screen settles everything else. Assume a single take and read the instructions the day the link arrives, not the day it is due. A neighbouring custodian process is covered in our Fidelity HireVue interview guide if you are applying across the sector.

What strong State Street answers do that weak ones skip

  • They name the institutional client: the asset manager, insurer, pension fund or central bank that depends on the work.
  • They show control-minded ownership: detection, containment, root cause and a permanent fix, never a number quietly corrected.
  • They match the track. A servicing answer is about records and exceptions; a markets or management answer argues institutional objectives; a technology answer protects resilient systems.
  • They never describe State Street as a retail bank.
  • They make no promises about format, because the only confirmed format lives in the invitation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does State Street use HireVue?

The best available source names Modern Hire for one internship pipeline instead. HireVue acquired Modern Hire in 2023, so either brand is plausible on screen, but platform use is programme-specific and unconfirmed anywhere else.

Why is this page on a HireVue practice site?

Recorded-answer skills transfer across one-way platforms, and HireVue now owns the reported vendor. This page labels the evidence honestly rather than promising a HireVue screen.

How many questions are in the State Street video interview?

Three to five is the reported figure, from a single third-party guide covering the internship route. Your live count comes from the invitation.

What should I emphasise?

Institutional-client understanding, data accuracy, controls, clear handoffs and motivation specific to your track.

What comes after the recorded round?

On the reported route, a Superday of two to three back-to-back interviews of 30 to 45 minutes each, mixing behavioural and role-specific technical questions.
