Progressive HireVue Interview Guide

Prepare for a Progressive HireVue interview using current hiring facts, customer-focused STAR examples, role variation, and a recording checklist.

Progressive says some candidates may complete a recorded video interview for recruiter review. Its current hiring page also says selection methods vary by role and that a candidate can re-record a recorded response before submitting it. Those facts belong to Progressive’s published process, but the invitation still defines your assigned task. Prepare a small evidence portfolio instead of a guessed question bank. Claims candidates can show a fair decision from incomplete records. Customer-care candidates can show accurate next steps under policy limits. Technology and data candidates can show evidence-based incident or quality work. The prompts here focus on customer focus, ownership, and a clear STAR result. They are original examples, not Progressive questions. Use the current job description to choose details, and keep your invitation’s deadline and screen controls authoritative. Strong preparation improves clarity. It does not guarantee a question or hiring result.

TL;DR

  • Progressive confirms recorded interviews for some candidates and variation by job.
  • Build examples around the decision a recruiter needs to assess in your job family.
  • Use STAR to expose evidence, not to make every answer sound identical.
  • Progressive publishes a re-record option before submission, but follow your task’s control.
  • Check customer fairness, ownership, and a measurable result during playback.

What does Progressive publish about recorded interviews?

Progressive says some applicants may be asked to complete a recorded video interview for a recruiter to assess. Its current hiring page says the methods vary by role and that recorded responses can be re-recorded before submission. That is a Progressive process statement, but your invitation still controls the exact screen, deadline, and available action.

Progressive’s page establishes a recorded step for some applicants. It does not name one timer, question list, or role-wide sequence. The overview of recorded interviews explains the general experience. Pair that context with the exact email and controls Progressive sends you.

How should evidence change across Progressive job families?

Progressive lists many job families, including claims, customer care, data, technology, sales, and corporate work. A claims example may centre on accurate next steps. A technology example may centre on an evidence-based incident response. Use STAR to make the work assessable, but do not force a customer story into a role where it is not relevant.

Progressive job family Decision worth preparing Representative prompt Evidence of completion
Claims or customer care A fair next step after checking records and policy Tell us about a time you found a fair solution for a customer. The customer received and understood the outcome
Technology or data An incident choice based on evidence rather than assumption How did you take ownership when priorities changed? Service, data, or review returned to a known state
Any early-career role A feedback loop that changed the work Describe a time you learned quickly after receiving difficult feedback. A later user or reviewer adopted the improvement

Select three different decisions, not three versions of one customer story. Label each card with situation, task, two key actions, and result. Add one proof point and one boundary. This gives you enough structure to adapt while keeping job relevance.

How do you use STAR without flattening the story?

Progressive explicitly advises candidates to use STAR, so audit the four parts after recording. Keep situation and task short. Split the action into the evidence you gathered and the decision you made. In the result, include how the customer, system, or manager confirmed the change worked.

Use the STAR answer guide to repair a missing part, not to script every sentence. The recruiter should still hear your natural reasoning and the facts that make the outcome credible.

What do fair decisions and feedback loops sound like?

These fictional examples demonstrate Progressive’s published STAR preparation advice. They are not supplied questions. Replace them with honest evidence that fits your role.

Example 1: customer focus

Representative prompt: Tell us about a time you found a fair solution for a customer.

“While working at a university equipment desk, a student returned a damaged camera and believed the fault existed before collection. The record showed no damage note, but I did not assume either side was wrong. I photographed the issue, checked the checkout log, and asked when the fault first appeared. The student’s earlier support message mentioned a sticking latch, but it had not been linked to the booking. I brought both records to the desk manager and proposed waiving the damage charge while sending the camera for inspection. The manager approved the decision. I explained the outcome and next step to the student, then linked support messages to future bookings in the handoff checklist. The inspection later confirmed wear rather than impact damage. I learned that customer focus can require slowing down a routine decision, collecting evidence from both sides, and using the right owner to reach a fair result.”

Why it works: The STAR sequence is clear, the candidate avoids a premature judgment, and the final process change follows from the evidence.

Example 2: clear STAR evidence

Representative prompt: Describe a time you learned quickly after receiving difficult feedback.

“In an internship, my first weekly report listed every completed task but did not help the manager decide what needed attention. She told me the update was accurate but not useful. I asked which decisions she made from the report and learned that she needed risks, owners, and dates. For the next week, I grouped work by outcome, put the three blocked items first, and asked each owner to confirm the next action. I sent a draft early so the manager could correct the format before the meeting. She used it to resolve two dependencies and kept the structure for later reports. I documented the headings for the next intern and asked for feedback again after a month. I learned that responding to feedback means identifying the user’s decision, changing the work, and checking whether the change helped. Simply accepting the comment would not have shown learning or ownership. The later review confirmed the new structure still served its purpose.”

Why it works: The candidate turns feedback into a specific format change, tests it with the user, and proves adoption without claiming perfection.

The representative question guide can stress-test your evidence under different wording. It does not predict Progressive’s prompts.

How should you use playback and the re-record option?

For Progressive practice, audit the four STAR parts after recording. The situation and task should be brief. Most words should explain your actions, evidence, and the result that the recruiter can assess.

The learning exercise below fits the feedback example and gives one timed, self-checked response. It is independent practice, not Progressive or HireVue content, and does not generate an AI grade.

Record one prompt under a real countdown

Thirty seconds to think, then two minutes out loud. One take, no pause, and you do not see the question until the clock starts.

Optional. Nothing is uploaded.

Use the published re-record option carefully if it appears. First record a natural answer. On playback, check job relevance, action ownership, and result evidence. Re-record when one is missing, not to chase a flawless performance. Test the device and network beforehand. The HireVue interview tips covers camera position and audio.

If the invitation differs from a general guide:

Progressive’s recruiting page cannot replace your job-specific invitation. Confirm the role, due time, and recording instructions before starting. If the active interface does not show the published re-record action, do not assume it exists elsewhere in the flow.

Ask the invitation contact about accommodations or access trouble. For a technical failure, record the exact message and whether you had submitted. That distinction helps support locate the attempt.
