NHS HireVue Interview: Questions and Process

What candidates report about NHS video interviews: the GMTS recorded format, trust and staffing partner variation, timings and values-led answers.

The NHS is not one employer with one video process, and treating it as one is the first prep mistake. Individual trusts hire their own staff, the Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) runs a national application, and staffing partners that supply NHS services recruit separately again. Two nursing staffing organisations, Pulse Nursing at Home and the Scottish Nursing Guild, name HireVue on their own interview pages, while no primary NHS source confirms a single video platform for directly employed trust roles or for GMTS. The best-documented recorded format in current candidate reporting is the GMTS Work Based Scenarios stage. This guide keeps those routes separate, because the honest answer to “what is the NHS HireVue interview” depends on which NHS employer invited you.

TL;DR

  • The NHS recruits through separate routes: trusts, the GMTS programme and staffing partners each run their own process and choose their own platform.
  • The best-documented recorded format is the GMTS Work Based Scenarios stage. Recent cohort accounts describe three or four video questions, unlimited preparation before you start each recording, exactly two minutes to answer and no pause or rerecord once recording begins.
  • HireVue is named on the recruitment pages of nursing staffing partners that supply NHS services. No NHS-wide vendor is confirmed, so your invitation is the authority on platform, timings and retake rules.
  • The NHS Constitution for England names the values interviewers listen for: working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and everyone counts. Show one value through a safe action or escalation rather than listing all six.
  • Prepare de-identified stories. Never use patient-identifying details, and never imply you acted beyond your role or competence.

Which NHS employer actually invited you?

Before you rehearse a single answer, identify the route you are on, because the recorded stage differs by employer.

Route Who hires you What the recorded stage looks like
Direct trust role An individual NHS trust Varies by trust; some routes use recorded video, and no universal vendor is confirmed
Graduate Management Training Scheme The national scheme, with specialisms such as general management, finance, human resources and health informatics Candidate reports describe a Work Based Scenarios stage with a timed video section alongside situational and reasoning exercises
Staffing partner Organisations supplying NHS services, for example nursing agencies and providers Pulse Nursing at Home and the Scottish Nursing Guild both name HireVue as their recorded interview platform

Two useful consequences follow. First, “the NHS interview” is really several interviews sharing a values vocabulary, so research the specific trust, programme or specialism rather than the NHS in general. Second, the format claims below apply to the routes where they were reported; do not assume a trust process copies the GMTS setup.

The reported GMTS Work Based Scenarios format

A third-party write-up of the 2025 GMTS intake describes the Work Based Scenarios assessment in three parts: a situational judgement section with 12 scenarios where you pick the most and least appropriate responses, a numerical and verbal reasoning section of 10 questions alternating with the situational items, and a video section with four questions allowing a two-minute response each, focused on motivational and competency topics. The same write-up states that once you start recording you cannot pause or re-record, and you press stop to submit. Cohort reports collected for our question bank describe three or four video questions and unlimited thinking time before you press record on each one.

Reported detail What candidates describe What to verify on your invitation
Question count Three or four video questions The count shown on your assessment screen
Preparation Unlimited before starting each recording Whether your screen shows a prep clock
Answer length Two minutes per question The timer on your screen
Retakes No pause or rerecord once recording starts Any stated retake rule
Wider assessment Situational judgement and reasoning sections alongside the video The section order and sitting rules in your invite

Compare that with the staffing partners. The Scottish Nursing Guild describes a HireVue interview of around 20 to 30 minutes where you can have another go if unhappy with an answer, and Pulse Nursing at Home describes breaks between questions and re-recording if needed. Same platform family, different rules, which is exactly why your own screen outranks any guide, including this one. For the mechanics shared across one-way platforms, read how HireVue works.

What NHS video questions probe

Across the sourced prompts in our NHS question bank, four themes recur: motivation for the specific route, values in action, safety and scope, and service improvement. Representative practice prompts, not claimed interview questions, include “tell us about a time you worked across different perspectives to improve a service”, “how would you respond if you noticed a safeguarding concern” and “why this trust, GMTS specialism or clinical role”.

Reported theme Value it probes What the reviewer listens for
Why this trust, specialism or role Motivation One local service fact plus evidence the work fits you
Values and difficult perspectives Working together for patients, respect and dignity Conflicting needs named, and the conversation or evidence that resolved them
Safeguarding and clinical judgement Commitment to quality of care, compassion Immediate safety, local policy, prompt escalation, accurate documentation, staying in scope
Service improvement Improving lives, everyone counts A defined stakeholder problem and a measure of what improved

The fail mode is reciting the Constitution without a decision attached. Pick one value per story and show it changing what you did. For a wider bank of prompts to rehearse, use the HireVue practice questions guide, and for the skeleton to hang each answer on, HireVue STAR method answers. If your route is clinical, the nursing HireVue questions guide covers safety and escalation evidence in more depth.

Knowing the reported two-minute limit is not the same as holding it under pressure, so run your answers under real conditions before the real screen: camera on, one take, two minutes, then a score and verdict on the run.

Worked answer: improving a service across perspectives

Representative practice prompt, original and de-identified. It is not a claimed GMTS or trust question and contains no patient information.

“At a university wellbeing service, students wanted same-day appointments while advisers warned that urgent cases could be crowded out. I mapped one month of requests and brought an adviser, receptionist and student representative into a short design session. We separated urgent safeguarding needs from quick information requests and tested a daily twenty-minute triage window plus a self-service guide for routine questions. I wrote the escalation criteria with the adviser rather than inventing them. After four weeks, routine email volume fell, urgent cases still received priority and average response time improved by a day. I learned that service improvement starts by making each stakeholder’s risk visible and agreeing the measure before choosing the solution.”

Why it works: the conflicting perspectives are named rather than flattened, the improvement is tied to a measure, and the candidate shows judgment about who writes escalation criteria. That is the GMTS pattern of stakeholder problem, evidence, then a service measure, delivered inside two minutes.

Recording day checklist

  • Re-read your invitation for the employer, platform, question count, timers and retake rules; reports differ by route and cohort.
  • Prepare six to eight de-identified stories covering motivation, values, safeguarding within your scope and a measurable improvement.
  • Test the room, camera and microphone with a short self-recording; the full list is in the HireVue setup and technical checklist.
  • If your screen does not state a retake rule, assume one take.
  • Do a timed rehearsal first. Your first practice interview is free and returns a score and verdict; you can start with NHS selected. Public-sector candidates face similar values-led prompts in HMRC’s recorded process, a useful cross-check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the whole NHS use HireVue?

No universal policy is established. Trusts, GMTS and staffing partners recruit separately, and only some routes have direct or candidate-reported HireVue evidence. Treat the platform named in your invitation as final.

What is the reported GMTS video format?

Recent cohort accounts and a third-party 2025 intake write-up describe three or four questions, preparation before pressing start, two minutes to record and no pause or rerecord once recording begins. Your current invitation remains authoritative.

What values should NHS answers show?

The NHS Constitution for England names working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and everyone counts. Demonstrate one through a safe action rather than listing them.

Can I use a real clinical story?

Use de-identified information only, stay accurate about your scope and never disclose patient-identifying or confidential details.
