The Morgan Stanley HireVue interview is a one-way recorded video round used early in graduate and summer analyst hiring. There is no interviewer. A prompt appears, you get roughly 30 seconds to think, then a timer runs while you record. Prep publishers report 3 to 5 questions, answers of about 90 seconds to 2 minutes, and a total sitting near 30 minutes. Reported completion windows are short, often 48 to 72 hours from the invitation. The round sits after the online application and aptitude tests, and before the phone screen, first rounds and the Superday. Corporate Finance Institute names Morgan Stanley among HireVue’s clients, and university career centres list it with Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan. Morgan Stanley does not name the vendor on its careers site, so treat counts as reported ranges.

TL;DR

  • Order is: application, aptitude tests, HireVue video, phone screen, first round, Superday.
  • Expect 3 to 5 prompts, about 30 seconds of prep, and 1.5 to 2 minutes to record.
  • Reported deadline is 48 to 72 hours from the invitation, so open the link the day it lands.
  • Leland reports one retry per question, with the first take deleted permanently if you re-record.
  • Brainteasers are not a common feature of this round. Behavioural and motivational prompts are.
  • Reported wait for a result is about one to three weeks.

Where does the HireVue sit in the Morgan Stanley process?

Stage What it is Typical shape
Online application Form, CV, division choice Morgan Stanley careers portal
Aptitude tests Numerical reasoning, situational judgement Reported before the video round
HireVue video interview One-way recorded answers 3 to 5 questions, about 30 minutes
Phone or recruiter screen Short live call Often with a recruiter or analyst
First round Competency plus division technicals Live, virtual or onsite
Superday Back-to-back interviews, sometimes a group exercise or case Final stage

The video round is a filter, not a formality. The strongest recordings go to human reviewers who decide whether you get endorsed forward. Before the real link opens, record three free timed HireVue prompts so the countdown is not the new part on the day that counts.

What questions does Morgan Stanley ask?

Reported prompts are heavily behavioural and motivational:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why Morgan Stanley?
  • Why this division, or why investment banking?
  • A time you handled pressure.
  • A failure and what you took from it.
  • Conflict, leadership, and initiative stories.

Light technical or market prompts appear in some divisions: a stock you would pitch, a market trend, a basic valuation idea. Leland notes that situational judgement puzzles and brainteasers, which show up at some other banks, are not a common part of the Morgan Stanley video round. Build your prompt bank from HireVue interview questions and drill them against a clock using HireVue practice questions.

How do you answer “why Morgan Stanley” without sounding generic?

The test is simple. Read your answer back and ask whether swapping in a rival bank’s name would break a single sentence. If it would not, the answer is empty.

Three things usually make it specific: a division and what that division actually does, a transaction or piece of research you followed and what you thought about it, and a conversation with a real person you can name by role. Two of the three is enough for 90 seconds.

Sample answer: why Morgan Stanley?

“Three reasons, and the first is the shape of the firm. Morgan Stanley pairs institutional securities with a very large wealth and investment management business, so advice on one side has a distribution engine on the other. I want to learn in a place where the firm’s own balance is part of the strategy conversation rather than a footnote.

Second, the division. I applied to equity research because I like being wrong in public and having to defend a number. I have followed the European consumer staples coverage for about a year, mostly to see how analysts handled the pricing versus volume argument after input costs fell. The good notes separated those two clearly. That is the discipline I want to be trained into.

Third, the people. I spoke to an associate in the London team at a campus event in February. What stuck was her description of the note review process, where the desk pushes back before the client ever sees it. That internal challenge is the part I would not get at a smaller shop.

So: firm shape, the research craft, and a team that argues internally first.”

Why it works: it names a division, a live analytical debate, and a first-hand conversation. No adjectives about prestige.

Sample answer: tell me about a time you worked under pressure

“Last summer I worked in operations at a logistics company. In August a warehouse management system upgrade went wrong on a Friday afternoon and we lost the pick list for about 900 orders due out that evening.

My task was to get the outbound trucks loaded before the 8pm carrier cut-off with no system list. My manager was handling the vendor, so the floor was mine.

I did three things. I pulled the previous day’s order extract from the reporting mailbox, because it was stale but 80 percent accurate on destination. I split the team into two, one group picking against that extract for the largest destinations by volume, one group physically verifying the exceptions. Then I set a hard rule: anything we could not verify in under two minutes went on the next day’s truck rather than holding the bay.

We loaded seven of the eight trucks on time. About 60 orders slipped by a day, and we told those customers before they asked rather than after.

What I took from it: under time pressure, decide what you are willing to lose early, and say it out loud so the team stops hesitating.”

Why it works: a real constraint, a decision rule stated plainly, and an honest result including what was missed.

How is the recording judged?

Language and delivery, then human review. HireVue removed visual analysis from its assessments in March 2020 and announced the change in January 2021, saying advances in language processing had made the visual component unnecessary. So the score does not read your face.

Practically, that rewards clean structure spoken out loud. Say “three reasons” and then deliver three. Use HireVue STAR method answers as the frame for anything starting with “tell me about a time”. What happens after you submit is covered in HireVue retakes, results and scoring.

What should you do in the 48 hours before recording?

  1. Read the invitation email properly, including the deadline and retry rules.
  2. Write six stories in STAR shape, one paragraph each. Do not script them word for word.
  3. Fix the room: light in front of you, quiet, wired internet if possible. The full list is in the HireVue setup and technical checklist.
  4. Record three timed answers and watch one back. Cut the throat-clearing at the start.
  5. Prepare one market or division-specific point you can drop in naturally.
