The JP Morgan HireVue interview is a one-way recorded video round. You get a prompt on screen, a short prep window of roughly 30 seconds, then a timer while you record. Candidate reports and prep publishers describe 3 to 5 questions, with investment banking analysts most often seeing 3 to 5 and answer limits between 90 seconds and 3 minutes. The mix is mostly behavioural, plus one commercial awareness prompt about a market event. It sits after the online application and the game-based assessment, and before live interviews and the Superday. Corporate Finance Institute names J.P. Morgan among the employers using the HireVue platform, and university career centres list it alongside Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley. JP Morgan does not publish the vendor name on its own careers site, so treat exact counts as reported ranges.

TL;DR

  • Order is: application, game-based assessment, HireVue video, live interviews, Superday.
  • Expect 3 to 5 prompts, about 30 seconds of prep, and 90 seconds to 3 minutes to answer.
  • One reported prompt is a market or world event and its effect on financial markets. Read the news before you record.
  • Lumovest reports one retry per question for the IB summer analyst HireVue. Read the on-screen rules; they change by year and role.
  • Facial analysis is gone from HireVue assessments since March 2020, announced January 2021. Language and delivery are what get read.
  • Deadlines are short. Reports commonly cite a few days from invitation, so open the link early.

What questions does JP Morgan ask on HireVue?

Reported prompts for investment banking analysts fall into three shapes:

  1. A major world event and how it affects financial markets.
  2. A project where you gathered information and built an action plan.
  3. Something significant you learned from a mistake.

Wider reports add “why JP Morgan”, “why investment banking”, resilience, accountability, adaptability and process improvement. Occasional light technicals appear (financial statements, beta) but they are the exception, not the round. A broader prompt bank sits in HireVue interview questions, and drills to run against a clock are in HireVue practice questions.

Sample answer: a world event and its impact on markets

“The event I have been following is the run of software carve-outs and the financing behind them. Over the last two years, large technology groups have separated slower-growth divisions and sold them, mostly to private capital.

The market effect I care about has three parts. First, it moved leverage out of the public bond market and into private credit, so a chunk of the risk now sits with funds rather than banks. Second, it changed how the parent companies are valued, because once the slower division is gone the remaining business is repriced on a different growth multiple, and you often see the re-rating before the deal closes. Third, it created a steady pipeline of sponsor-to-sponsor exits, which supports advisory fees even when the initial public offering window is shut.

For a bank like JP Morgan, that matters because it shifts revenue mix towards advisory and private capital coverage rather than equity capital markets. The thing I would watch next is refinancing dates, because that is when the private credit pricing gets tested in public.”

Why it works: the event is described in one sentence and the rest is consequences, with a named thing to watch next.

Sample answer: something you learned from a mistake

“In my summer internship I owned a weekly volumes report for a retail client team. In week three I sent it out with the regional split wrong. I had copied a formula down a column and it had picked up the prior month’s rows, so two regions were overstated by roughly 15 percent.

A manager caught it in the meeting, not me. That was the part I still think about. I had checked the numbers looked reasonable, which is not the same as checking they were right.

I did three things. I sent a correction within the hour with the cause spelled out rather than a vague apology. I rebuilt the file so the regional totals cross-checked against the national total automatically, and the cell turned red if they disagreed. Then I applied the same check to the two other recurring files I owned.

What I learned is that plausibility is not verification. Now, on anything recurring, I build the check into the file rather than relying on my eye. It cost me an afternoon once and it has saved me since.”

Why it works: a real error, ownership without grovelling, and a change in process that is easy to picture.

How long is the JP Morgan HireVue and how fast must you finish it?

The whole sitting is commonly reported at 20 to 30 minutes. The invitation deadline is the part people miss. Reports cite short completion windows, often a handful of days, and one guide states seven days from the invitation. The invitation email carries the real date. Open it the day it arrives, read the instructions, then schedule the recording for a time when your flat is quiet.

Room and kit matter more than people think. Work through the HireVue setup and technical checklist once, and you will not lose an answer to a laptop microphone picking up a fridge.

Does JP Morgan score your face?

No. HireVue removed visual analysis from its assessments in March 2020 and announced it in January 2021, saying language had become the stronger signal and the visual part was not worth the concern it caused. What is left is what you say and how you deliver it, followed by human review of shortlisted recordings.

That changes your preparation. Signpost out loud (“three reasons: first, second, third”), because structure is now carried entirely by your words. What happens to the recording afterwards is covered in HireVue retakes, results and scoring.

What separates a pass from a reject?

  • Specificity. “I worked with a team” scores nothing. Name the team, the number, the constraint.
  • One story per prompt. Recycling the same anecdote is obvious across a 4-question set.
  • A finished ending. Land the result before the timer, do not get cut mid-sentence.
  • Firm knowledge that could only be about JP Morgan.
  • Calm pace. Rushing to fit three minutes of content into 90 seconds reads worse than saying less.

If you are choosing between preparing for this and a live round, the differences are set out in HireVue vs live interview.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are in the JP Morgan HireVue?

Reports cluster at 3 to 5. Investment banking summer analyst sets are often reported at 3 questions with one retry each.

Do you get a retry?

Lumovest reports one retry per question for the IB summer analyst format, with the response uneditable once submitted. Rules differ by role and year, so read the screen before recording.

How long do you get to answer?

Roughly 30 seconds of prep and 90 seconds to 3 minutes to record, depending on the role. Target 90 to 110 seconds of content.

Should you prepare technicals?

Prepare the basics you would expect anyway (the three statements, what beta means) but do not spend the week there. The round is behavioural first.

Is there a game assessment before the video?

Yes, JP Morgan uses a game-based battery ahead of the video stage. See the HireVue game-based assessment guide for what those measure.

What if your internet drops mid-answer?

Stop, note the time, and email the recruiter address on the invitation the same day. Technical failure is a normal support ticket, not a disqualification.
