HireVue Basics
How Does HireVue Work? Format, Timings and Scoring
How does HireVue work? You record answers alone against a timer, usually 30 seconds to think and 3 minutes to speak. Here is the full flow, start to result.

HireVue works by replacing the first-round phone screen with a recorded interview you complete alone, whenever you like, from a link in your invitation email. There is no interviewer on the call. A question appears on screen, you get a short prep countdown (commonly 30 seconds), then the camera records your answer up to a limit (commonly 3 minutes). You repeat that for 5 to 8 questions, then submit. Some employers add a set of short games instead of, or alongside, the video. HireVue says a video assessment usually takes under 20 to 30 minutes, and advises setting aside 45 minutes. Your recording goes to the employer’s recruiting team, who review it against the competencies they defined for that role.
TL;DR
- Your invitation email contains a unique link. The interview opens from there, on your schedule.
- Before the real questions, HireVue runs a system check and unlimited practice questions.
- Standard rhythm: about 30 seconds of prep, then up to 3 minutes of recording per question.
- HireVue stopped using facial analysis in scoring. The company announced this in January 2021.
- Candidates do not receive a score. Results go to the employer.
- Minimum recommended connection speed is 350 Kbps, or 0.35 Mbps, up and down.
What happens from the invitation email to submission?
The flow is the same across employers because the platform is the same. Only the question list and the game set change.
| Stage | What happens | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Invitation | Unique link arrives by email. You choose when to start. | Employer sets a deadline |
| System check | Camera and microphone permissions. Click Allow, Remember, Close. | 2 minutes |
| Practice questions | Same interface as the real thing. Repeat until comfortable. | 5 to 10 minutes |
| Recorded questions | 5 to 8 prompts, prep countdown then recording | 20 to 30 minutes |
| Games (if included) | Short timed games, roughly 3 minutes each | 20 to 30 minutes |
| Submission | Click through the final screen to send responses to the recruiter | 1 minute |
The single most useful thing you can do before opening that link is speak to a camera against a clock once. Try three free timed HireVue prompts and watch the playback. Then work through our HireVue setup and technical checklist so the system check is not the first time you find your microphone is wrong.
Does HireVue give you a practice interview?
Yes, and it is the most under-used feature in the whole process. When you open the link from your invitation, HireVue runs the system check and then presents practice questions in the identical interface: same countdown, same recording bar, same layout. HireVue’s candidate guide says you can do several of these practices until you feel comfortable to continue. Practice answers are part of the warm-up. What gets sent to the recruiter is the real interview you submit at the end.
Use it properly. Record a full practice answer, play it back, and check three things: your face is lit from the front, your voice level is even, and you finished your point before the bar ran out. Then run another.
How does HireVue score your answers?
Two things get confused here, so it is worth separating them.
Human review. Many HireVue interviews are simply watched by a recruiter, scored against a competency rubric, and passed on. No algorithm involved.
Assessment scoring. Where an employer buys HireVue’s assessment product, responses are transcribed and the content of the answer is analysed. HireVue’s FAQ says its video assessments evaluate both job knowledge and competencies such as communication, conscientiousness, problem solving, team orientation and initiative.
What is no longer in scope is your face. HireVue announced in January 2021 that it had discontinued facial analysis in its assessments. Its chief data scientist said language analysis had become more predictive and that visual analysis no longer significantly added value. HireVue’s FAQ also states plainly that it never uses the video recording to identify you.
That matters for how you prepare. Older careers pages still warn that glancing away from the lens will be read as cheating. Treat that as dated advice about looking engaged, not as a scoring rule. What you say is the part being measured. Our guide to HireVue retakes, results and scoring goes further into what the employer actually sees.
What does a well-formed recorded answer sound like?
Because nobody interrupts you, structure has to do the work a conversation normally does. Here are two answers at the right length.
“Tell me about a time you had to learn something quickly.”
“I joined a hotel front desk team three weeks before a 400 person conference, and the property had just switched booking systems. Nobody on my shift had been trained on group check-in in the new system.
I gave myself two days. On day one I sat with the reservations manager for an hour and wrote down every step for group arrivals as a numbered list, in plain language, not system jargon. On day two I ran the whole process on a test booking twice, once correctly and once deliberately breaking it, so I would recognise the error screens.
On the conference morning we checked in 386 guests in just over two hours. Two colleagues used my numbered list at the desk beside me, and the duty manager kept it for the next group booking.
What I took from it is that learning fast is mostly about choosing what not to learn. I ignored every part of the system that was not group arrivals, and that is why two days was enough.”
Why it works: a real constraint, a specific method, a countable result, and a lesson that would transfer to a different job.
“Why should we hire you for this role?”
“Three reasons, and I will be specific about each.
First, I have done the core task before. Your job description leads on reconciling supplier invoices against purchase orders. In my placement year I ran that reconciliation monthly for around 120 suppliers, and I found a duplicate payment pattern that had been running for two quarters.
Second, I am comfortable being the person who asks. That reconciliation only improved because I called suppliers directly rather than emailing and waiting. In a team of six I was the one making those calls, and my manager moved the process to phone-first afterwards.
Third, I want this particular route. You rotate finance graduates through treasury in year two. I want that exposure early, because I would rather find out now whether I prefer transactional or forward-looking work.
I am not the most experienced candidate you will see. I am confident I am the one who has already done the day one task, and who will keep asking questions when the numbers do not tie.”
Why it works: it maps directly to the job description, gives evidence rather than adjectives, and closes with an honest limitation instead of overselling.
What do you need technically?
HireVue’s candidate FAQ recommends an internet download and upload speed of at least 350 Kbps, which is 0.35 Mbps. It also advises a fully charged device, good lighting, a tested microphone, and roughly 45 minutes set aside. HireVue says that if your connection drops during an assessment you can pick up where you left off, and that the games are built to work on slower connections.
Chrome is the safest browser choice for the video portion. Whatever you use, run the system check on the same machine, in the same room, at the same time of day you plan to record. See our setup and technical checklist for the full list.
How is HireVue different from a live interview?
The biggest differences are silence and finality. No interviewer nods, so you get no signal that your answer landed. And unless the employer has enabled retakes, your first take is the take. That changes preparation: you rehearse endings, not just openings, because a recorded answer that trails off has nothing to rescue it. We compare the two formats directly in HireVue vs live interview.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do I have to complete a HireVue interview?
The employer sets the deadline, and it is stated in the invitation email. Do not assume a week. Open the link the day it arrives so you know the deadline and the format.
Can I do HireVue on my phone?
Usually yes, but a laptop is better. A phone is harder to keep at eye level, harder to light well, and more likely to interrupt you with a notification.
Is there a person watching me record?
No. On-demand HireVue interviews are recorded alone with no interviewer present. HireVue also supports live interviews, which are scheduled and real time.
Does HireVue analyse my facial expressions?
Not in scoring. HireVue announced in January 2021 that it had discontinued facial analysis, and says it never uses your recording to identify you.
What if I need an adjustment for a disability?
Ask the recruiter. HireVue’s candidate FAQ says candidates may request interview questions in advance and can ask about alternative assessment formats.
Will I get feedback?
Rarely. Candidates are not shown a score. Any feedback comes from the employer’s recruiting team, and most first-round screens do not offer it.
