HireVue Retake, Results and Scoring: What Actually Happens

Can you retake a HireVue interview, how is HireVue scored, and how long do results take? What the platform assesses, what it stopped assessing, and who decides.

HireVue retake rules, scoring and results are all controlled by the employer, not by HireVue, and that single fact explains most of the confusion candidates run into. HireVue supplies the platform. The employer configures how many questions you get, how long you get, whether any re-recording is allowed, when the link expires, and how the responses are reviewed. So there is no universal answer to “can I retake it”. There is only what your invitation says and what the employer’s recruiting team will agree to. What can be stated clearly is how the assessment works: HireVue removed facial analysis in March 2020, its models are built per job role, and they analyse the content of what you say. This page separates what is fixed from what varies, and tells you where to look for your own answer.

TL;DR

  • Retake rules are set by the employer, not HireVue. Your invitation and the interview screen are the authority.
  • HireVue offers a practice interview before an On Demand recording, and practice responses are separate from your scored answers.
  • HireVue removed facial analysis in March 2020 and announced it in January 2021.
  • Scoring uses natural language processing on the content of a response, trained on job-relevant competency data for that specific role.
  • Humans stay in the loop. Fortune reported in 2021 that only about 20 percent of HireVue customers used the automated predictive analytics feature.
  • Results timing is owned by the employer. HireVue does not decide who advances.

Can you retake a HireVue interview?

It depends on the employer’s configuration, and there are three different things people mean by “retake”.

Re-recording a single question during the interview. Some employers allow a limited number of re-records per question. Others allow none. The interview screen tells you before you start recording, and it is the only reliable source for your interview.

Redoing the whole interview after you submitted it. This is not normally available. Once you submit, the responses go to the employer, and HireVue does not manage the hiring process, so a request to reopen has to go to the employer’s recruiting team.

Getting a fresh invitation after a genuine technical failure. This is the realistic route when something actually broke. Contact the employer’s recruiting team the same day, state what failed, roughly when, and which question you were on.

What you want Who decides What to do
Re-record one question mid-interview Employer configuration Read the on-screen instructions before you start
Restart the whole interview mid-session Employer Stop, note the problem, contact the recruiter
Redo after submitting because you did badly Employer, rarely granted Prepare properly first time
New link after a technical failure Employer recruiting team Escalate the same day with specifics
Extend the deadline Employer recruiting team Ask before the link expires, not after

The practical conclusion is unglamorous. Assume one attempt. Then run the practice interview from your invitation link, and rehearse the questions separately. If you want a timed rehearsal before the real thing, record three free timed HireVue prompts and play them back.

How is a HireVue interview scored?

HireVue states that its assessments are purpose-built for a specific job role rather than running one general algorithm. The company identifies performance indicators for that role, then uses natural language processing that analyses only the content of a response, trained on job-relevant competency-based response data. HireVue also says it audits the algorithms for adverse impact on protected groups before, during and after development, and that industrial and organisational psychologists are involved in that testing.

Two things follow for you as a candidate. First, what you say is the thing being assessed, so the substance of your examples matters more than your polish. Second, the competencies are role-specific, so a strong answer for a customer service role and a strong answer for an analyst role are not the same answer. Read the job description and mirror its language honestly.

There is also a limit worth stating plainly. HireVue’s published material describes its principles and its testing process. It does not publish detailed audit results for every algorithm, and an independent audit by O’Neil Risk Consulting and Algorithmic Auditing, reported by SHRM, was limited to representative early-career hiring use cases rather than every algorithm the company runs.

Does HireVue analyse your face?

No, and it has not since March 2020. HireVue removed facial analysis from its assessments then, and announced the change publicly in January 2021.

The reasoning is documented. HireVue’s own research found that advances in natural language processing had increased the predictive power of language analysis, and that visual analysis no longer added significant value. Fortune reported that non-verbal attributes contributed roughly 4 percent to the model’s predictive accuracy, and quoted the then chief executive saying that in the context of the concerns people were raising about bias, it was not worth the incremental value.

SHRM reported that speech elements such as pauses and tonality remained small factors under review at the time of the announcement. So the honest summary is this: the content of your answers is the main event, delivery is a minor factor at most, and your facial expressions are not scored. That should change how you prepare. Practise what you say, not how you smile. Our STAR method guide is the structure to use for that.

How long do HireVue results take?

The employer decides, and HireVue does not control it. That is why two candidates who took the same assessment on the same day can hear back a week apart.

What drives the wait is the employer’s process, not the technology: how many applications arrived, whether a human reviews every recording, whether the interview is one stage of several, and whether the role is on a fixed graduate timetable or rolling. Fortune reported in 2021 that only about 20 percent of HireVue customers used the automated predictive analytics feature, which means human review is common and human review takes calendar time.

Three things you can do while waiting. Check the status in the employer’s own application portal rather than in HireVue, because the employer’s system is where a decision appears. Note the date you submitted, so a polite follow-up after the employer’s stated timeline has a fact in it. And keep applying. A single pending assessment is not a pipeline.

Do you get feedback on a HireVue interview?

Usually not, and this surprises people. Most employers give a decision, not a report. Some large graduate programmes provide a short strengths summary, but that is a choice the employer makes, and it is not the default.

That has a practical consequence. If you cannot get feedback from the process, you have to generate it yourself. Record your answers before the real interview, then watch them twice: once with the sound off to check your posture and eye line, and once with the picture off to check your pace and filler words. That is the closest thing to feedback you control. Our setup and technical checklist covers the recording conditions that make the playback honest.

What rights do you have around an AI-assessed video interview?

This varies by jurisdiction, so treat your invitation and the employer’s privacy notice as the starting point. In Illinois, the Artificial Intelligence Video Interview Act sets a baseline that is a useful model for what transparency looks like. Employers must notify each applicant before the interview that artificial intelligence may be used to analyse the video and consider the applicant’s fitness for the position. They must explain how the artificial intelligence works and what general types of characteristics it uses to evaluate applicants. They must obtain the applicant’s consent before evaluating them with it, and they may not use artificial intelligence analysis on an applicant who has not consented.

If your invitation does not tell you whether AI is used in the review, you may ask the recruiting team. Asking is not a red flag. It is a reasonable question about a process you are being assessed by.

How should you prepare given how scoring works?

Work backwards from what is actually assessed.

  • Content first. Six real stories, structured so the actions and the outcome are unmistakable. See HireVue practice questions for the prompts these stories cover.
  • Role language second. Read the job description and use the competencies it names, honestly, where they genuinely apply to your examples.
  • Delivery third. Clear speech and finishing your answer inside the time limit matter. Your facial expressions do not.
  • Conditions fourth. Good light and clean audio protect the content. They do not substitute for it.

If you are also comparing formats, HireVue vs a live interview explains why the recorded version rewards preparation more heavily: nobody rescues a thin answer with a follow-up question, and the whole answer has to stand alone. And how does HireVue work covers the mechanics of the platform end to end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I redo a HireVue question if I make a mistake?

Only if your employer enabled re-records, and the interview screen says so before you begin. Assume no, and prepare accordingly.

Does practising inside HireVue affect my score?

The practice interview exists to get you comfortable with the format, and it is separate from your scored responses. Read the instructions on your practice screen for the rules that apply to your interview.

Will an AI reject me without a human ever watching?

Fortune reported that only about 20 percent of HireVue customers used the automated predictive analytics feature. Whether a human reviews your specific recording depends on the employer, so ask them if it matters to you.

The employer sets the deadline and it is stated in your invitation. If you need more time, contact the recruiting team before the link expires, because HireVue does not manage the deadline.

Can I ask for feedback after a rejection?

You can ask the employer. Many will not give detail, especially at high-volume graduate intake. It costs nothing to ask politely once.

Does speaking quickly or slowly change my score?

SHRM reported that speech elements such as pauses and tonality were small factors under review. Speak clearly and finish inside the time limit, then stop worrying about it and spend the effort on your examples.
