Diageo HireVue Interview: Graduate Video Assessment

Diageo names HireVue for a roughly 30-minute recorded video assessment in its graduate hiring. Stages, reported questions and preparation.

HireVue Practice Team · Sep 19, 2026 · 8 min read

Diageo does something most consumer employers do not: it documents the video stage on its own careers site. Its graduate application page names HireVue directly, describes a recorded video assessment of about 30 minutes, and confirms preparation time before each question. What it does not publish is a question count, a per-answer timer or a retake allowance, so treat sites quoting exact seconds as unverified and let your invitation lead. Everything below is labelled: Diageo’s own pages first, candidate reports second.

TL;DR

  • Diageo names HireVue for a recorded video assessment of about 30 minutes, with preparation time before each question.
  • The graduate process runs four stages: application, video assessment, a multiple-choice online assessment also powered by HireVue, then an assessment centre.
  • Diageo says the platform’s practice questions are unscored, and advises looking at the camera, not the screen.
  • GenAI use during assessments or interviews is explicitly not permitted by Diageo.
  • No official question count, per-answer timer or retake allowance is published. Your invitation is authoritative.
  • Diageo recommends one scheme per candidate, recruits on a rolling basis, and makes unsuccessful applicants wait 12 months before re-applying.

Where does the HireVue round sit in the Diageo process?

Diageo’s own how-to-apply page maps four stages for its graduate programmes:

Stage What Diageo says it is What it means for you
Application and eligibility Short form, tailored CV, optional cover letter Choose one scheme and be clear on your why
Video assessment Recorded video answers to pre-set questions via HireVue, about 30 minutes The stage this guide covers
Online assessment Multiple-choice questions powered by HireVue, approximately 30 minutes How you think and approach situations
Assessment centre Virtual or in-person exercises Meet the business, with at least five working days’ notice

Two details on that page are easy to miss. Diageo recruits on a rolling basis and views applications as they arrive, so early submission beats perfect timing. And if you apply for another Diageo role within six months, the same assessment results carry forward automatically: a weak video sitting can follow you into a second application.

What does Diageo tell you about the video assessment?

The first-party detail is unusually specific. Diageo says you record answers to pre-set questions on an online interview platform, that the stage takes about 30 minutes, and that its purpose is to learn about your “passions, interests, and purpose”. Ahead of each question you get preparation time, and Diageo’s advice is to use it: understand what the question is actually asking, then plan with STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

The FAQ page adds three facts candidates routinely miss. Questions appear on screen and your recorded answers are sent as part of the assessment. The platform’s practice questions come first, and Diageo states they are not real questions from your interview set and will not be assessed. And when the interview starts, look at the camera, not the screen: looking at the webcam gives the assessor the feeling of eye contact.

Preparation should mirror a live interview, per Diageo: research its website and Annual Report, understand the job description, and build examples from any part of life, since extracurriculars and part-time work count as transferable evidence. One rule is stated plainly: GenAI use during an assessment, or any live or virtual interview, is not permitted in a Diageo recruitment process. Prepare however you like beforehand; sit the real thing alone.

The platform mechanics behind this are covered in how does HireVue work.

What questions do Diageo candidates report?

Diageo does not publish its question set. The prompts below come from candidate reports on review sites and recruitment forums, so treat them as directional rather than confirmed. Two trace to a long-running forum thread on Diageo and Guinness Nigeria graduate trainee recruitment; forum posts are unverified candidate accounts, so prepare the themes rather than memorising wording.

Reported prompts across accounts include:

  • Tell us about yourself and why you are applying to this role.
  • What is your passion?
  • Tell us about a time when something challenged your beliefs.
  • Tell us about a time you improved something, why and how.
  • Describe an instance when you influenced people to do something.
  • How does Diageo align with your career goals?
  • How does Diageo’s Spirit of Progress strategy resonate with you personally?
  • Tell us about a time you worked as a team.
  • Tell us about a time you demonstrated leadership in a challenging situation.
  • Tell us about a time something did not go to plan, what you did, and the result.
  • What do you hope to bring to and gain from this role?
  • Tell us about one failure and what happened afterward.

Clustered, they map to six themes: personal motivation, open mindedness, learning agility, influence, career fit and purpose alignment. Six distinct STAR stories covering those themes will cover nearly every reported prompt; shape them with HireVue STAR method answers and browse the wider prompt list in HireVue interview questions.

On the listener’s side, Diageo’s FAQ describes looking for “authentic, team-spirited people who follow their instincts, take educated risks and look to champion, influence and inspire”. Its stated behaviours include One team, Decisive and Competitive, plus the curiosity and commercial thinking its careers material emphasises. Translate that into evidence: a motivation answer needs a named brand, market or occasion, not adjectives about the portfolio; an influence answer needs a real trade-off; an open-mindedness answer needs a position you actually changed.

Sample answer: what is your passion?

This is original coaching material, not a claimed live prompt. Replace the facts with your own evidence.

“Working behind the bar of my student union taught me that people rarely buy a drink; they buy what the drink does for the occasion. The same group that ordered premium bottles on celebration nights ordered whatever was fastest on a packed match night. That observation became a project: I tracked sales by occasion for a term and showed that match nights alone justified a faster-serve format at a lower price point. The bar manager trialled it for six weeks; queue complaints dropped and margin held.

That is why a brand business appeals to me: the interesting question is which product wins a specific occasion and how you make that choice easy at the point of sale. Diageo’s portfolio is built around that question, and I want to learn how a business reads occasions and converts them into growth on real brands.”

Why it works: the passion is an observation about consumer behaviour, not a declaration of fandom, and it lands on a business question Diageo actually works on.

Sample answer: tell us about a time something did not go to plan

Again, this is an original coaching example, not a claimed Diageo prompt.

“During a university consulting project for a local cafe chain, we presented a recommendation the owner rejected in five minutes. Our footfall data was right, but we had assumed the lunch queue was demand-limited when it was capacity-limited: the kitchen was already at its limit, so a second till would not create more lunches to sell. We had solved the wrong constraint.

I owned the correction. I timed each station through a lunch service, found the bottleneck was sandwich assembly rather than the till, and rebuilt the plan around a prep-first workflow. The owner trialled it for a week and reported roughly 20 percent more covers at peak.

What I took from it: when a plan gets rejected, the useful question is which assumption failed, not how to present the plan better. I now test the constraint before I test the slide.”

Why it works: it admits the miss plainly, shows the diagnostic move, and ends with a reusable rule rather than an apology.

How is Diageo’s round different from other consumer video interviews?

Consumer firms use the same vendor differently. Unilever’s recorded stage, the digital interview, bolts a business case onto short questions (see the Unilever HireVue guide), and Mars publishes several possible video formats on one page. Diageo is more legible: one named platform, one recorded assessment of about 30 minutes, behavioural and motivational in flavour.

The wrinkle is that HireVue can appear twice in one Diageo process, because the video assessment and the separate multiple-choice online assessment share the vendor. Do not assume completing one satisfies the other.

What should you fix before recording?

  • Run Diageo’s own checklist: log in early, complete the system set-up, test camera, connection and microphone.
  • Use the platform’s practice questions. They are unscored, so the first real prompt is not your first time seeing the interface.
  • Prepare six stories across the six themes above, drawn from any part of your life. Diageo says transferable skills count.
  • Set the room once: quiet space, clean background, front light. The HireVue setup and technical checklist covers it end to end.
  • Do not read a script. It is audible, and flat delivery wastes a round where the assessor only has your words.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are in the Diageo HireVue interview?

Diageo does not publish a count. It says the video assessment takes about 30 minutes. Your invitation and the live screen are authoritative.

How much preparation and answer time do you get?

Diageo confirms preparation time before each question but publishes no seconds or universal per-answer limit. Reports vary by programme and location, so follow the timers on your screen, not any guide.

Can you retake an answer?

No retake allowance is published. Assume scored answers are one take unless your interface says otherwise; only the practice questions are confirmed unscored.

What happens after the video assessment?

A virtual or in-person assessment centre, with at least five working days’ notice. Diageo says you will hear the outcome within two weeks of it.
