Deutsche Bank HireVue Interview: Questions and Process
Deutsche Bank's recorded video interview: the official two minute format, the five things it scores, reported questions and how to build answers that fit.

Deutsche Bank publishes more about its video interview than most banks do. Its early-careers FAQ states the format outright: two minutes to prepare after each question, two minutes to record, one attempt. The same FAQ says the interview is not live, the platform records you rather than asking for uploads, and you can test the setup with an example question first. What it does not publish is a vendor name or a question count; candidates and prep publishers report HireVue, with sets running roughly three to eight questions. Regional variation is real: recorded video applies to some roles in the UK, Germany and APAC, while other regions may use a live virtual meeting instead. Your invitation beats every published figure, including the ones here.
TL;DR
- Official format: two minutes to prepare, two minutes to record, one attempt per question, with an example question and tech check first.
- Recorded video applies to some roles in the UK, Germany and APAC; other regions may meet the hiring division in a live virtual call.
- Deutsche Bank does not name a vendor; candidates and prep publishers report HireVue. The question count is unpublished, with reports clustering around three to eight.
- The bank says it is scoring your motivation for Deutsche Bank, your understanding of the role and division, and why financial services fits you.
- Deutsche Bank strongly recommends you do not use AI tools during the assessment. Prepare your evidence beforehand, then answer alone.
Where the video interview sits in Deutsche Bank’s process
The bank’s own early-careers page lays out a six-stage route, and the recorded round sits in the middle of it:
| Stage | What happens | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Explore and apply | Choose a programme, region and division, then submit a short form and CV | The FAQ asks you to apply to just one role in one country per cycle |
| Online assessments | Eligibility screen, then tests that vary by role and region | The FAQ lists a situational judgment test, a behavioural questionnaire and an ability test; you get 96 hours per set |
| Virtual interview | This guide’s subject | Pre-recorded video for some UK, German and APAC roles; a live virtual meeting with the hiring division elsewhere; about six weeks after you apply |
| Assessment centre or Super Day | In-person assessment day in most cases | Competency exercises, case studies and a technical interview depending on the role; on-campus interviews in India |
Division variation matters here. The Investment Bank, Corporate Bank, Private Bank and Technology, Data and Innovation routes emphasise different content, and prep publishers report that the question mix shifts with the programme. Treat the sequence above as the official shape and your invitation as the authority on which parts apply to you.
The format Deutsche Bank actually publishes
Most banks leave candidates guessing about timers. Deutsche Bank’s FAQ is unusually specific: two minutes of preparation after each question appears, two minutes to record, a single attempt. It also confirms the mechanics: no self-uploads, the platform records you through the browser, and a test run with an example question precedes the scored set.
Two gaps remain. First, the vendor: Deutsche Bank never names HireVue, but candidate reporting and prep publishers including Road to Offer and Finbound identify it, and the described mechanics match. Second, the count: reports run from about three or four questions (Road to Offer) to as many as eight on investment banking summer analyst loops (Aced). Plan for a set in that band.
What Deutsche Bank says it is scoring
The FAQ lists five things interviewers want from the recording, and each maps to a different kind of preparation:
| What Deutsche Bank asks for | How to show it in two minutes |
|---|---|
| Why you are right for Deutsche Bank, and why it is right for you | One firm-specific reason plus one personal proof from your own experience |
| How the bank differs from other institutions | Name something structural: its European anchor, its corporate bank reach, or the division’s actual clients |
| Why this division suits you more than another | Contrast the work itself, not the prestige; explain the problems, pace or client contact you want |
| Understanding of the role and the work you will do | Reference what a graduate or intern in that division actually does day to day |
| Why financial services over other sectors | A reason tied to the work, not the salary or the brand |
That last row is where generic answers die. “I want a fast-paced client-facing career” fits every bank and several other industries; it demonstrates none of the five criteria.
Reported Deutsche Bank video interview questions
These prompts come from candidate reporting and prep publishers, not from Deutsche Bank, which does not publish its question bank. Treat them as representative rehearsal material:
- Why Deutsche Bank, and why this division rather than another part of the bank? Reported as the standard opener by Aced, Finbound and Road to Offer.
- Tell me about yourself. Reported by Aced and Finbound; keep it pointed at the division you chose.
- A teamwork, collaboration or integrity story. Reported across all three prep publishers; structure it with the STAR framework.
- A commercial awareness prompt, such as a news story or market development with your take. Reported by Aced, Finbound and Road to Offer; the scoring is in the consequence you draw for a client, not the headline you recite.
- A behavioural prompt on preparation, prioritisation or delivering inside a difficult team. Representative of the bank’s stated interest in relevant skills.
For a wider bank of prompts to rehearse against, use our list of HireVue interview questions. Five or six prepared stories, each tagged to one of the five scoring criteria above, covers almost every combination reported.
Building an answer that fits two minutes
Two minutes is about 260 to 300 spoken words, shorter than it feels. The structure that survives the clock is compressed STAR: ten to fifteen seconds of situation, your responsibility in one line, most of the time on the two or three actions you personally took, closing on a result and one lesson tied to the division.
Here is a representative coaching example for the commercial awareness prompt, built to that length:
“A development I follow is the divergence in interest-rate paths between major economies. For a European exporter paid largely in dollars, that affects more than the translation of revenue: it changes hedge costs, financing choices and the timing of investment. The opportunity is to protect planned cash flows while keeping some benefit from favourable currency moves; the risk is over-hedging uncertain sales and creating a new exposure. I would want to understand the client’s forecast confidence and risk limits before discussing instruments. What interests me is that it joins macro research to a concrete corporate decision, which is why this division appeals to me.”
Why it works: the development is named in one line, the rest of the answer is consequence for a specific client, and the close ties it to the division without a prestige adjective. That shape only holds if you can run it under real conditions: an unscripted prompt, a live countdown and one take. Rehearse exactly that with a free Deutsche Bank practice run before your invitation arrives.
The AI rule Deutsche Bank states plainly
The FAQ repeats the same sentence under three separate questions: “We strongly recommend that you do not use AI tools to answer these questions,” adding that the bank wants authenticity and a clear demonstration of your interest in Deutsche Bank. Draft and research with whatever tools you like beforehand; on camera, the words need to be yours.
Mistakes that get Deutsche Bank candidates cut
- A why-banking answer that never reaches the chosen division. The bank explicitly asks why this division suits you better than another, so a generic markets speech fails its own rubric.
- Reciting market news without a consequence. The awareness prompt is scored on what the development changes for a client or desk, not on whether you read the headline.
- Spending the two-minute prep window writing a script. With one attempt and no retake, prep time is for choosing a story and three beats, not composing sentences. The setup and technical checklist covers the rest of what one attempt makes expensive.
- Using AI during the real assessment despite the bank’s explicit guidance against it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Deutsche Bank applicant get a recorded video interview?
No. The bank describes pre-recorded video for some roles in the UK, Germany and APAC, while other regions may use a live virtual meeting with the hiring division. Programmes and divisions differ, so your invitation decides.
Is the Deutsche Bank video interview on HireVue?
Deutsche Bank does not name a vendor. Candidates and prep publishers report HireVue, and the described format matches it, but the logo matters less than the mechanics: two minutes to prepare, two minutes to record, one attempt.
How many questions are in the Deutsche Bank video interview?
Not officially published. Reported sets run from about three or four questions up to eight on some routes. Prepare stories flexible enough to cover either.
Can I retake a Deutsche Bank video answer?
The official FAQ says you get one attempt per response. There is a platform test and an example question beforehand, but once the scored set starts, assume every take is final. What happens after submission is covered separately.
Can I use AI to answer the questions?
Deutsche Bank strongly recommends against it, in writing, three times on the same FAQ page. Use AI for research and rehearsal if you wish; the recorded answers must be your own.
